10-Day Itinerary for Samoa: A Complete Guide

Day 1: Arrival in Apia

You’re landing in Apia, the capital city of Samoa. Once you clear customs, head to your accommodation and settle in. You’ll probably be tired from the flight, so take today easy. Explore the town on foot, grab a cheap meal at one of the local restaurants, and walk along Beach Road.

If you’re looking to dive into history right away, check out the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum. It’s a short drive out of the city. The views alone are worth it and you’ll learn a lot about the famous author’s final years here.

Day 2: Apia and Surroundings

Start your day at the Apia Market. You’ll find every kind of local produce here — from fresh fruits to Samoan handicrafts. It’s a great place to buy souvenirs early in your trip.

Afterward, head to the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve for some snorkeling. It’s one of the best snorkeling spots right in town. You’ll see plenty of vibrant marine life, and the waters are calm, making it perfect for beginners.

Later, visit the Papaseea Sliding Rocks. These natural waterslides are a local favorite, but be cautious as the rocks can be slippery. It’s fun and refreshing!

Day 3: North Coast – Lalomanu Beach

Today, drive to Lalomanu on the southeastern coast. You’ll probably need to rent a car or hire a driver; it’s a few hours from Apia, but totally worth it. Lalomanu Beach is often considered one of the best beaches in the world.

Spend the day relaxing in the sand or swimming in the clear blue waters. There are simple beach fales (traditional Samoan huts) where you can rent a spot and chill all day. Take in the sunset here – it’s magical and will be one of the highlights of your trip.

Day 4: Explore Upolu’s Waterfalls

It’s time to explore Upolu’s stunning waterfalls. Start with Togitogiga Waterfall, set in a lush natural reserve where you can take a refreshing dip in the water. Next, head to the beautiful Papapapaitai Falls, flowing into a deep canyon. You won’t swim in this one, but the view is jaw-dropping.

Later, trek into the rainforest and visit Fuipisia Waterfall. From the top, you’ll get stunning views of the surrounding jungle. Make sure to bring your camera!

Day 5: To Sua Ocean Trench

No trip to Samoa is complete without visiting the famous To Sua Ocean Trench. It’s an iconic spot: a giant sinkhole filled with crystal-clear water. Bring your swimsuit and take the steep ladder down to the water. The swim is refreshing and the surrounding gardens are peaceful.

When you’re done, relax in the nearby coastal area. There are some good picnic spots here, and you can watch the waves crashing on the rocky shores.

Day 6: Visit Savai’i

It’s ferry time! Catch a ferry over to Samoa’s largest island: Savai’i. The ferry ride takes about an hour. Once you arrive, either rent a car or catch a local bus to explore the island’s quieter side.

Start by visiting the Saleaula Lava Fields. These eerie fields are remnants of a 1905 volcanic eruption. You’ll see old lava-covered churches and homes—it’s a fascinating way to learn about the island’s history.

Day 7: Savai’i – Alofaaga Blowholes and Afu Aau Waterfall

The blowholes at Alofaaga are a must-see. Watch in awe as powerful jets of water shoot up into the sky from the volcanic rock formations. This natural wonder is breathtaking, especially when the waves are strong.

Then, head to Afu Aau Waterfall to cool off. It’s a secluded spot that’s perfect for swimming and enjoying a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature. You’ll find fewer tourists here, too, which adds to the serenity.

Day 8: Savai’i – Mount Matavanu Hike

If you’re up for a hike, head to Mount Matavanu. The trail up this volcano is moderately difficult but incredibly rewarding. You’ll hike through untouched forest, and the views from the top are spectacular. Along the way, don’t be surprised if you meet locals who’ll share stories about the area or offer fresh fruits as a snack.

After your hike, take the rest of the day to relax. You’ve earned it! Consider checking into a local beach fale for a quiet night under the stars.

Day 9: Culture Day in Manono Island

From Savai’i, make the short hop to tiny Manono Island. This place is about as laid-back as it gets. There are no cars on the island, so everything moves at an easy pace.

Spend today immersing yourself in village life. You can take a walking tour of the island, learning about traditional Samoan customs and culture. You’ll see demonstrations of weaving, cooking, and traditional Samoan dance. It’s a beautiful way to understand day-to-day life on these islands.

Day 10: Back to Apia

Head back to Apia today by ferry. Take your time once you’re back in the capital. If you still have time to spare, check out anything you missed on your first visit. You could swing by the Vailima Brewery for a tour and taste Samoa’s most famous beer. Or you can just spend your last day wandering around the town, eating some good Samoan food, and picking up last-minute gifts.

By the late afternoon, you’ll probably be winding down and preparing for your flight. Spend your last moments soaking in all the beauty of Samoa — you’ll soon be on your way home, but you’ll definitely be carrying this experience with you forever.
