Entry rule for your passport
Visa required: apply online in ImmiAccount for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), tourist stream, before you travel. Australia sets the stay case by case, generally 3 months.
Official sources: Department of Home Affairs, Australian Government.
Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for a tourist visit or a visit to family and friends, applied for from outside Australia. Business visits, medical treatment, study and work use other visas or streams.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Conditions to check
- You need a valid passport or other travel document. The visa is linked digitally to that passport, so if you plan to get a new passport, do it before you apply.

- Trip purpose Conditions to check
- The tourist stream covers holidays, cruises and visits to family or friends, for any purpose except business or medical treatment. You can study or train for up to 3 months, and you cannot work.

- Age Conditions to check
- Applicants under 18 add a birth certificate naming both parents, consent on Form 1229 or a statutory declaration from any parent not traveling, and Form 1257 if they will not stay with a relative or guardian.

- Residence Conditions to check
- You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided. The page states no rule tied to where in India you live, and the application is made online.

- Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
- India is not on the ETA or eVisitor passport lists, and Home Affairs names no exemption for holders of other countries' visas or residence permits. Plan on the Visitor visa.

How to apply
Log in to or create an ImmiAccount, fill in the Visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream application, attach your documents and pay the application charge. Home Affairs does not process an application until the charge is paid, and it may decide without asking for more information, so attach everything at the start.
You can have health examinations before you apply or wait until Home Affairs asks. It will tell you if you need to give biometrics. Do not arrange travel until you have the grant in writing.

Documents to include
Home Affairs lists:
- the passport pages with your photo, personal details and issue and expiry dates, plus a national identity card if you have one - proof of name changes, if any - proof you can fund your stay and leave Australia, such as 3 months of itemized bank statements, pay slips or tax records - an invitation letter from a relative or friend in Australia, if you are visiting someone - proof of reasons to return home, such as an employer letter, study enrollment, family or property - any military service record; a police certificate if asked
Translate non-English documents into English and scan everything in color.

Traveling with children
Each family member, including children on a parent's passport, needs a separate application, though families can submit together. For an applicant under 18, add a birth certificate naming both parents, consent from any parent who is not traveling on Form 1229 or a statutory declaration, with a signed photo ID, and Form 1257 if the child will not stay with a relative or legal guardian.

On arrival and during your stay
Bring the passport linked to your visa. Complete and show the Incoming Passenger Card at the border; SmartGates can process eligible ePassports. Your grant letter and VEVO show your stay period, conditions and whether the visa is single or multiple entry. You cannot extend the visa: to stay longer, apply for a new visa before it ends, unless it carries condition 8503 (No Further Stay).

Exceptions
Parents and step-parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents can ask for a visa valid for more than 12 months, decided case by case, but cannot stay more than 12 months in total in any 18-month period. Business visits and medical treatment are outside the tourist stream.
