Where you can leave luggage
Most travelers end up using one of three kinds of place. The right one depends on where you are heading next and when you need the bags back.
Always check the opening times of the place against your pick-up time. Rules, sizes and time limits differ from one place to the next, so read the page for your exact location before you go.
Airport left luggage and lockers
Staffed counters and lockers sit in or near the terminals. Schiphol, for example, says its lockers are handy if you have a transfer or want to see Amsterdam without your bags. Some counters sit before security, so a quick city trip is possible between flights.
Railway station lockers and service desks
Many stations have coin or card lockers, and some have a staffed desk. Frankfurt Hbf lists lockers in two sizes paid by card, and the travel service center at Tokyo Station keeps bags for the day.
City luggage-storage services
These networks let you book online and leave bags at a partner location. They suit days when you are not near a station or airport. The section on how they work below sets out the terms one network publishes.

Left luggage at major airports and stations
What follows is only what each official page says. Hours, sizes and limits can change, so open the page linked below your place before you travel.
London Heathrow
Heathrow lists a luggage storage service run by a separate operator. You can book online or just turn up. The page says storage areas are monitored 24/7, and it offers stays from 0 to 3 hours up to more than 7 days. It does not name terminals, size limits or banned items, so ask when you book.
Amsterdam Schiphol
There are two options. Lockers sit after security in the transfer area near the gates: each is 40 x 40 cm and 70 cm deep, and a stay can last up to 7 days. Baggage storage at Arrivals, level -1 between Arrivals 1 and 2, takes hand and hold luggage for up to 30 days. Both are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are flying on, collect your bags before you go through security, because it is hard to come back once you have passed it. Keep your receipt or a photo of it, since losing it brings an administration fee.
Singapore Changi
Baggage storage counters operate in Terminals 1 to 4 and at Jewel, in public areas and in the transit area, and the directory lists each as open 24 hours daily. You can pre-register for baggage storage on the page.
Istanbul Airport
The left luggage offices are in the terminal building next to the domestic passenger exit and opposite exit 13 on the arrivals floor. Lockers are listed near Gates 1 and 6 on the departures level and across from exits 8 and 14 on the arrivals floor.
Tokyo Narita
Staffed storage counters stand before security in Terminals 1 and 2, with three charge levels by bag size and a cloak service for clothing. Coin lockers are before security in all three terminals. Daily-rate lockers count a day from the start of use until midnight, so a late-night pick-up can count as a second day. Continuous use is limited to 8 days for small, medium and large lockers and 5 days for extra-large ones, found only on the 2nd floor of the Terminal 3 main building. Some smart lockers offer reservations and same-day hotel delivery for bags left by 11:30 AM, to participating hotels in 10 central Tokyo wards and Urayasu City, but not from Terminal 3.
Paris Charles de Gaulle
Paris Aéroport lists a left-luggage service run by Bagages du Monde, open every day from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. It sits in Terminal 2, level 0, in the exchange hall of Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV Airport Station, before the checks. The page says bags are X-ray screened and the area has constant video surveillance, and you can pre-book online. A separate cloakroom takes accessories and special items such as helmets, surfboards and bicycles.
Dubai International (DXB)
Dubai Airports lists short-term storage at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, available 24/7. In Terminals 1 and 2 it is run by dnata Baggage Services; the Terminal 1 desk is on the arrival level near Boots Pharmacy and Etisalat. In Terminal 3 it is Emirates Left Luggage, on the arrival level near Exit 1, behind Boots Pharmacy. The page sets a maximum size for standard luggage of 21 x 24 x 11 inches and treats larger bags and valuables as separate categories, so ask at the desk before you queue.
Tokyo Station
The travel service center offers temporary luggage storage, and items are kept for the day. It is on your left as you exit the Marunouchi North Exit ticket gate on the 1st floor, and its listed hours are 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, open all year.
Zurich Hauptbahnhof
The station page lists luggage lockers on level -1, on the mezzanine level of ShopVille. Listed hours are 4:15 AM to 1:15 AM Monday to Friday, and always open on Saturday and Sunday. The page gives a phone number for questions and says all details are provided without guarantee.
Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof
The station page lists two locker sizes, 35 x 45 x 85 cm and 52 x 62 x 85 cm, both paid by card and both with a use period of 24 hours. The page asks you to read the lockers' terms of use on site and does not list banned items.

What you can't store
Several official airport and station pages above do not list banned items. Frankfurt tells you to read the terms on the lockers, and Schiphol links its baggage storage terms. If your bag holds anything unusual, ask the counter before you queue.
One city luggage-storage network publishes its list. It does not allow items that are prohibited by law or considered hazardous, or whose packaging may harm people, the environment or other stored bags.
Dangerous or hazardous goods
Dangerous materials, drugs or psychotropic substances, weapons or firearms, and waste are on the list.
Money and papers of value
Paper money, coins, credit cards, traveler's cheques, and documents such as investment offers, revenue stamps and fuel vouchers are not accepted.
Valuables and electronics
Gold and silver in any form, precious stones, works of art and antiques are excluded. So are phones, tablets, laptops and similar devices.
Living things and bulk goods
Plants, live or dead animals and bulk goods are not accepted.
Anything extra a host adds
The network says additional items can be agreed in writing with each host, so check your drop-off point before you arrive.

How city luggage storage works
Radical Storage describes itself as a platform where you book online and a host, which it calls an Angel, collects, looks after and returns your luggage at the booked location on the dates and times you choose. You need an account, and users must be over 18.
At drop-off you complete and sign a luggage delivery form supplied by the host and keep the part showing the reference number, which you need to claim your bag. The bag is handed back only to the person who signed the form. If you do not collect by the pick-up date, the host may dispose of the bag.
Radical Storage says each bag carries its guarantee of up to 10,000 euros per claim. Its terms call this a guarantee between users, not a contract of insurance. To claim you must report within seven days, and a signed list of items with estimated values is needed for the booking. Exclusions include money, jewelry, passports, documents costly to replace, and anything lost because a prohibited item was knowingly stored. You can cancel for free at least 1 hour before the booked drop-off time and get a full refund to the original payment method.

Questions travelers ask
Where can I store my luggage for a few hours?
Start with the airport or station you are in. Airports such as Heathrow, Schiphol, Changi and Narita list left-luggage counters or lockers on their own pages, and stations such as Frankfurt Hbf and Zurich HB list lockers. Tokyo Station has a staffed desk that keeps bags for the day. If you are elsewhere in a city, a luggage-storage network lets you book a partner location online. Check opening hours against your pick-up time first.
What is left luggage?
Left luggage is a service that keeps your bags safe for a set time while you do something else, such as sightsee or wait for a late train or flight. It goes by other names, including baggage storage and luggage storage. It may be a staffed counter, a desk run by a station, or a self-service locker. Heathrow, Changi, Istanbul Airport and Narita all use this kind of service, so look for these terms on airport pages.
Can I leave luggage at the airport?
Often yes. Heathrow lists a luggage storage service and Changi lists baggage storage in all four terminals and at Jewel. Istanbul Airport has left luggage offices and lockers. Schiphol has lockers after security and a storage area at Arrivals. Narita has staffed counters and coin lockers before security. Details differ by airport, including maximum stay and where the counter sits, so read the page for your airport before you plan around it.
How do I store luggage in a city?
You can use a station locker, a station desk or a luggage-storage network. With one network, you book online, bring your bag to the booked location, sign a delivery form and keep the part with your reference number. You collect from the same location and it is handed only to the person who signed. You need an account, you must be over 18, and you can cancel free at least 1 hour before drop-off for a full refund.
Is it safe to store luggage?
Official pages describe some protections but no service is risk free. Heathrow says its storage areas are monitored 24/7. One city network says each bag carries a guarantee of up to 10,000 euros per claim, and its terms say this is not a contract of insurance. Claims must be made within seven days, and money, jewelry, passports and hard-to-replace documents are excluded. Keep valuables and documents with you, and check your own travel insurance.
What can't I leave in luggage storage?
Rules differ by provider, and many airport and station pages do not list banned items. Frankfurt Hbf points to the terms on the lockers. One city network does not accept dangerous materials, drugs, weapons, waste, plants, live or dead animals, money, credit cards, precious metals and stones, works of art, antiques, or phones, tablets and laptops. Ask your provider before you go, and carry passports, cash, cards and electronics with you.
