Chile visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian citizens need a visa, which Chile calls a prior authorization, from a Chilean consulate for a tourist stay, unless they hold a valid US visa or US green card. You apply online through Chile's foreign ministry, and the consulate for your area handles the case.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa required for tourist stays of up to 90 days, unless you hold a US visa (not a C transit visa) or a US green card valid at least 6 more months when you arrive.

Official sources: Chile Abroad, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile (chile.gob.cl).

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to mainland Chile, applied for through the Chilean consulates in New Delhi or Mumbai. Work, residence, official passports and the separate entry form for Rapa Nui (Easter Island) need their own checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Not stated in the cited guidance
Chile's visa table and decree list nationalities without separate rules for diplomatic or official passports, so this guide covers ordinary passports only.

Official sources: Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile (consulado.gob.cl).

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The visa covers stays with no intent to settle, such as recreation, sport, health, study, business or family visits. It does not allow paid work, apart from the exceptions in article 50 of Law No. 21.325.

Age Conditions to check
Under-18s must enter with a parent or guardian, or carry written authorization from them, a court or the competent authority, legalized by a Chilean consulate or apostilled.

Residence Conditions to check
Apply to the Chilean consulate for where you live: New Delhi covers northern and eastern states, Bangladesh and Nepal; Mumbai covers the other states, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Afghanistan.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
A US visa of any kind except C (transit), or a US green card, with at least six months of validity when you arrive removes the need for a Chilean visa. The stay is then up to 90 days, with enough funds.

Carrier and arrival route Not stated in the cited guidance
The pages read set no airline or transit rule for Indian passports. They do say a visa does not guarantee entry: border officers can still refuse you if you do not meet the conditions.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
The visa allows one or several entries and a stay of up to 90 days. Once in Chile, the stay can be extended by 90 days through the National Migration Service.

Who needs a visa

Chile's Decree 359, published in the Diario Oficial on 17 September 2025, lists the nationalities that need a prior authorization or visa from a Chilean consulate for a short stay, and India is on it. The foreign ministry's visa table shows the same.

There is one exemption. Indian citizens holding a US visa of any kind except a C transit visa, or a US green card, with at least six months of validity on arrival, can enter without a Chilean visa for up to 90 days. You still need enough money for your stay.

How to apply

Apply online on the foreign ministry's consular services platform, choosing the Chilean consulate that covers where you live: New Delhi for the northern and eastern states, Bangladesh and Nepal, and the Consulate General in Mumbai for the rest of India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Afghanistan.

The consulate emails its decision. If it approves, it sends payment instructions and gives you 30 days to pay, then emails the visa. Print it and carry it with your passport when you travel. The Embassy warns that the process takes several weeks and can take up to 6 months, so apply early.

Documents

The checklist asks for the online form explaining the purpose and length of your trip, a 5 x 5 cm photo on a white background, a copy of your passport's data page, and proof of your own income, or of a close relative living in Chile, through your last three payslips or bank statements. If you live outside India, add proof of your residence status there.

For Indian citizens the checklist also asks for a sponsorship letter from a company established in India or Chile, legalized or apostilled, showing the commercial purpose of the trip. It does not say how this applies to a purely tourist trip, so ask your consulate before you apply. The consulate can also ask for an apostilled police certificate and call you for an interview.

Fees and your stay

Chile's visa table lists the fee for Indian citizens as US$42 for a single-entry visa and US$76 for a multiple-entry visa, each allowing stays of up to 90 days. You pay only after the consulate approves the application.

The visa does not guarantee entry: border officers can refuse you if you do not meet the conditions. Once in Chile, you can ask the National Migration Service to extend your stay by 90 days.
