Overview
Most first trips start with three days in Copenhagen, including a coast-line day trip to the Louisiana museum in Humlebæk and Kronborg in Helsingør, about 40 to 50 min by train. InterCity trains then cross the country to Aarhus in about 3 hours, stopping at Roskilde for its cathedral and Viking ships. This guide covers mainland Denmark: the Faroe Islands and Greenland have their own entry rules, and a Schengen visa is not valid there.
Late spring and summer are the mildest months and bring Tivoli's summer season and sailing at the Viking Ship Museum. Winters are cold and dark, but Tivoli's Christmas season opens in mid-November and Nyhavn holds a Christmas market in December. Several museums close on Mondays.
When to go
Tivoli Gardens opens for Christmas from 13 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027, and its 2027 summer season runs from 30 Mar to 26 Sep. Between its seasons the Gardens are closed.
