Egypt visa requirements for British citizens

Last verified

For a mainland Egypt trip, check the full visa route before booking. The short Sharm resort permission has a limited area and duration, and other British passport categories have different online eligibility.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa required for mainland trips: apply for an eVisa or get a 30-day visa on airport arrival. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after arrival and have 1 blank page.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Who this covers: Full British citizen passports, using UK government guidance for travel from the UK. Other British nationality categories and travel documents are not covered by this route.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guidance is for full British citizen passports. British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies passport holders cannot use the online application route described by FCDO.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The route checked here is tourism. Ask the consulate about work, study or other purposes.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
FCDO’s tourist-visa section gives no age-based eligibility threshold. That does not settle individual child or family-document requirements.

Residence Conditions to check
FCDO scopes its advice to travel from the UK. If applying while resident elsewhere, confirm consular jurisdiction and requirements.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
FCDO does not list another country’s visa as a condition of this British-citizen tourist route.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
The resort exception requires air arrival at Sharm. Taba land entry has different rules; no particular airline is named.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
Arrival visas permit up to 30 days. A visa’s entry-validity window is not permission to stay for that entire window.

Apply through the official portal

Register on Egypt’s eVisa portal, complete the application and await approval. Download and print the approved visa for arrival. Payment or an application reference is not the approval itself.

Official sources: Egypt Ministry of Interior.

Keep your arrival documents together

Carry your passport, printed eVisa, itinerary and hotel details. Check the dates and passport number on your approval before departure. Keep a paper copy with your travel documents so you can reach it without mobile data.

When the Sharm resort permission is enough

FCDO describes free arrival permission for air arrivals at Sharm staying less than 15 days in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba resorts. Obtain a full visa for travel beyond that area or a longer stay. A day trip to Cairo changes the route you need.

Do not apply this airport exception to the Taba land crossing. Check its separate instructions before traveling.
