Estonia visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian tourists need a Schengen visa for Estonia unless a Schengen residence permit already covers the trip. If Estonia is your main destination and you live in India, you apply in person through VFS Global for the Estonian Embassy in New Delhi.

Entry rule for your passport

Schengen visa required for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, unless you hold a Schengen residence permit. Apply in person through VFS Global for the Estonian Embassy in New Delhi.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia (vm.ee).

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to Estonia, with applications lodged in India. Existing Schengen permits and EU-family rights can change the route. Work, long stays and official passports need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Confirmed for this scope
Estonia's visa-free list names India only for diplomatic passports. Ordinary passports are not on it, so this guide covers ordinary passports only.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
For tourism or private reasons the Ministry lists proof of accommodation and of the itinerary, such as a booking of an organized trip. A short stay visa covers visits of up to 90 days.

Age Conditions to check
A minor traveling without both parents needs a parental travel authorization. The fee is lower for ages 6 to 11 and waived under 6, and fingerprints are not taken under 12.

Residence Conditions to check
You lodge the application in your country of residence. If you live in India and Estonia is your main destination, you apply at the Estonian representation or the state that represents it in India.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
A third-country national who holds a residence permit of a Schengen state does not need a visa to enter Estonia. A family member of an EU, EEA or EFTA national can enter with a residence card issued under Directive 2004/38/EC.

Carrier and arrival route Not stated in the cited guidance
India is not on the common airport transit visa list that the Ministry prints. It also refers to extra national lists, which this guide did not read, so check them if you change planes in Estonia.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
A short stay is no more than 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. A Schengen visa can be single or multiple entry and can be valid for up to five years, but the days you may stay are shown on the visa.

Where and how to apply

Apply to the country that is your main destination by length of stay; if you cannot name one, apply to the country whose external border you cross first. For Estonia you apply at the Estonian Embassy in New Delhi, and the Ministry says it works with VFS Global in India to receive applications. All applications are lodged in person, each applicant needs a separate appointment, and the consular officer may phone you or invite you to an interview.

Your photograph and 10 fingerprints are collected when you apply, unless you gave fingerprints for a visa less than 59 months ago. Children under 12 are exempt.

Timing and processing

Submit the application at least 15 days before you travel and no earlier than six months before. The consulate normally decides within 15 days of accepting the application, and in individual cases this can stretch to 45 days when more checks or documents are needed. Some Schengen states ask to be consulted on applications from certain nationalities, which can add up to seven calendar days.

Documents, insurance and money

You need a signed application form, a photograph, and a passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least three months after your planned departure from Schengen, with at least two blank pages. Add travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen states with at least €30,000 of cover, and proof of accommodation and of your itinerary.

Show sufficient means of subsistence: Estonia sets the amount at €70 for each day of stay. For India the harmonized list asks for original bank statements for the last three months, income tax return acknowledgments for the last two assessment years, and, depending on your situation, pay slips, an employment contract, an employer approval for leave, company registration, or pension statements. Minors traveling with one parent need notarized consent from the other.

Fees

The Estonian state fee for a Schengen visa is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, and there is no fee for children under 6. A service fee is charged separately by the external service provider when you submit the application. All fees are due in full when you apply, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

At the border

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026, so expect your face and fingerprints to be recorded on arrival. ETIAS is not yet in operation, and it would not replace the visa that an Indian tourist needs. Estonia is in the Schengen area, so carry your passport when crossing internal borders, where checks can be reinstated temporarily.
