Overview
Paris starts most first trips. With more time, the TGV reaches Lyon in about 2 hours and Marseille in a little over 3, for Provence and the Riviera, and the Loire Valley châteaux are an easy trip from Paris. Check whether ETIAS travel authorization is required for your dates.
Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots. Summer is busy, and in August many Parisians leave town and small shops and restaurants close.
When to go
Paris museums each close one day a week: the Louvre on Tuesdays, the Musée d'Orsay and Versailles on Mondays. Book the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and Versailles ahead.

Getting around
- Fast trains: TGV trains link Paris with Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Strasbourg; book early for low fares.
- In Paris: The Metro stops within a few minutes' walk of almost everything; buy tickets in the RATP app or at machines.
- Airports: The RER B train links Charles de Gaulle airport with central Paris in about 35 to 45 minutes.
- On foot: Central Paris is compact: walking along the Seine is often faster than changing Metro lines.
