Overview
Most first trips start with three days in Tbilisi, including Mtskheta, about 20 min away by road. A day trip north to Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church takes about 2 h 55 min each way. Heading west, Kutaisi is about 3 h 25 min from the capital, with Gelati, Bagrati and the caves nearby, and Batumi on the Black Sea is another 2 h 15 min.
Spring and autumn suit sightseeing, with warm days and some wind and rain. Summer is for hiking in Kazbegi and for the Black Sea coast, and winter brings skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani. Stepantsminda stays chilly at altitude even in summer, so pack warm clothes.
When to go
Autumn is the grape harvest, when you can press grapes and learn how churchkhela is made. On 16 July, Gergetoba fills Gergeti Trinity Church above Stepantsminda.
