Entry rule for your passport
Ordinary passports normally need a Schengen visa unless existing Schengen permission or an exemption covers the trip. Short stays: up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen.
Official sources: Hellenic Republic, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports, legally resident in India, applying for a short tourist visit to Greece. Existing Schengen permission, EU/EEA family-member rights, work and study need separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Confirmed for this scope
- Greece's foreign ministry lists India as visa-required for ordinary and service passports. Diplomatic passports are listed as visa-free and are outside this guide.

- Age Conditions to check
- Children under 12 do not give visa fingerprints. People physically unable to provide scans are also exempt; previously stored scans can be reused for further applications within 5 years.

- Residence Conditions to check
- Apply through the consulate responsible for your country of legal residence. This guide assumes residence in India and Greece as the main destination; residence elsewhere changes where you apply.

- Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
- A valid residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen country removes the need for a separate short-stay visa. A visa from a non-Schengen country does not.

- Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
- A connection through another Schengen country means entering Schengen there before the onward flight to Greece; an airport transit visa alone is insufficient. Check separate non-Schengen transit requirements for your route.

- Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
- Short stays are limited to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Your visa also sets its own dates, number of entries and permitted days; follow the stricter limit.

Where and when to apply
Apply to the country you will visit, or the one where you will spend the longest time; if stays are equal, the first country you enter. If you legally reside in India and Greece is your main destination, apply through the Embassy of Greece in New Delhi and its authorized centers. Its New Delhi visa application center, run by Global Visa Center World, is at Shivaji Stadium metro station.
Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before you travel. The European Commission gives a normal processing period of 15 days, extendable to 45 for closer examination or extra documents. Allow additional time for appointments and passport return. An interview or further documents may be requested; submitting an application does not guarantee approval.

Documents, fee and fingerprints
Prepare a valid passport, the application form, a photo, travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation, and documents showing the purpose of your trip, your accommodation, your funds and your plans to return. The consulate can ask for more.
Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. Fingerprints are normally collected, with exemptions for children under 12 and people physically unable to provide them; stored scans may be reused. The standard visa fee is €90, reduced to €45 for children aged 6 to under 12; children under 6 are exempt from the visa fee. Service-center charges can be additional.
Children need their own passport. Check parental consent requirements for children traveling alone, with one parent or with another adult. Ask the consulate about any extra documents for your case.

Check existing visas and permits first
If you already hold a valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa, you may not need a new visa for a short visit. An existing short-stay Schengen visa can also cover Greece if its territorial validity includes Greece and its dates, entries and remaining days permit the trip. Read it carefully before applying again.
Eligible family members accompanying or joining an EU/EEA citizen under free-movement rules may qualify for a different, facilitated procedure. Ask the consulate which rules apply before using the ordinary tourist application route.

At the border
A visa does not guarantee entry. Border guards can ask for proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket and enough money for your stay, so keep copies at hand.
The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: short-stay crossings are recorded electronically. Border officers may compare your fingerprints with your visa application record; exemptions apply. The Commission also says ETIAS is not yet in operation.
