Overview
A first five-day trip can use Budapest as one base, combining Castle Hill, the Parliament, museums and thermal pools with a day in Szentendre. The H5 train reaches Szentendre in roughly 40 minutes from Batthyány tér, with more time needed for waiting and the walk into town. This compact route leaves other parts of Hungary for a longer trip rather than spending each night in a different place.
April to June and September to October are practical choices for walking between museums and along the Danube. Summer can be hot, while winter brings colder outdoor stops and shorter visitor hours. Build the week around museum closing days, religious holidays and actual Parliament tickets. Széchenyi normally excludes visitors under 14, so families should choose an alternative such as the House of Music and check its own calendar.
When to go
Religious holidays, state events and public holidays can close individual sights even in the recommended months. Check the actual date before booking a museum-focused day.

Getting around
- Airport bus: 100E links Budapest Airport with central Pest around the clock. Allow about an hour including waiting and traffic, and use the airport-specific ticket.
- In Budapest: Combine walks with metro and tram rides. Validate the correct ticket, and allow extra time for Castle Hill slopes and station entrances.
- To Szentendre: H5 runs from Batthyány tér to Szentendre in roughly 40 minutes. Budapest-only tickets do not cover the whole journey; check outer-section fares and engineering works.
