Entry rule for your passport
No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive and expire at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.
Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).
Who this covers: Ordinary British citizen passports for short tourist visits to Italy under the standard Schengen visitor rules. Work, residence, emergency travel documents and special citizenship or family rights need separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

- The checked tourist route covers ordinary British citizen passports. Do not apply it automatically to an emergency passport, refugee travel document or another nationality category.

Count Schengen days and check your passport
For an ordinary British citizen passport, Italy permits short tourist visits without a visa. Count time in the other Schengen countries as part of the same 90 days in any 180-day period. Use the official short-stay calculator if you have several trips close together.
Your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years when you enter and remain valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area. Passport validity is a document requirement, not extra days of stay. Work and longer residence require a separate check.

Prepare for the border and EES
Carry accommodation details, your return or onward plans and evidence that you can fund your trip. A visa exemption does not guarantee admission. Border officials can check the purpose and conditions of your visit.
The European Commission says the Entry/Exit System became fully operational on April 10, 2026. Eligible short-stay visitors register at the external Schengen border; allow time for the checks. On November 3, 2026, ETIAS was not operating and no applications were being collected. Check its official status again before departure. EES registration and any future ETIAS authorization do not increase the permitted stay.

Check children and resident exceptions
Each child needs their own passport. For a child traveling alone, with one parent or with an adult who is not their legal guardian, check consent requirements for the departure, transit and destination countries. Airlines can also require their own forms.
If you hold a Schengen residence permit or have special rights as an EU citizen’s family member, check that route separately and carry the documents proving it. The ordinary tourist allowance does not describe every resident or family case.

Plan accommodation for under-18 travelers
UK travel advice says travelers aged 17 or younger cannot check into Italian hotels or holiday accommodation without an accompanying adult. It also says British minors traveling without parents do not need an authorization stamped by the embassy. That does not remove consent requirements for other countries or the airline.
If you arrive from another Schengen country and stay somewhere that does not register your visit, check the declaration-of-presence requirement. UK guidance says you must declare your presence to the local immigration authority within 8 days; hotels and registered accommodation handle guest registration.
