Entry rule for your passport
Usually a Schengen visa is required for tourism. Qualifying Schengen visas or residence documents can change the route; follow their conditions and the 90-in-180-day limit.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to Italy. This covers the standard Schengen visa route; valid Schengen visas, residence permits, long-stay visas and EU family rights can change the documents needed.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Confirmed for this scope
- India appears on Italy’s visa-required list for ordinary passports. Diplomatic, official and other travel documents need their own check.

- Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
- This is a short tourist visit. The application must document the purpose, accommodation, funding and transport or return arrangements.

- Age Conditions to check
- Children under 12 are exempt from visa fingerprint collection. This exemption is not permission to travel without the child’s required passport or visa.

- Residence Conditions to check
- Apply through the competent consulate where you legally reside. Italian nationality-based guidance does not mean every Indian passport holder must apply in India.

- Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
- A valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa can remove the need for a separate short-stay visa. Check the exact document; an unrelated country’s visa is not the exception described here.

- Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
- An airport transit visa permits only a connection within the international transit area. It does not authorize a tourist visit to Italy; check every transit country on your route.

- Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
- Follow the visa’s permitted days, validity dates and number of entries, as well as the 90-in-180-day Schengen ceiling. A visa valid for several years does not permit continuous residence.

Choose the right consulate and appointment
For a trip centered on Italy, apply through the Italian consulate responsible for where you legally live, following its authorized application arrangements. For a tour of several Schengen countries, use the main destination; for ordinary sightseeing trips, this is the country with the longest stay. If stays are equal, use the first country visited.
Submit no earlier than 6 months before travel and normally at least 15 days before departure. Decisions normally take 15 days and can take up to 45 days. Allow time to get an appointment too. The Italian ministry describes personal attendance and an interview as part of its procedure. Online forms or bookings do not establish an interview exemption.

Prepare documents for each traveler
Prepare your application form, passport photograph, travel medical insurance, accommodation, trip plan, financial evidence and evidence that you intend to leave after the visit. Use the responsible consulate’s current checklist for documents and translations specific to your situation. Additional documents may be requested.
Your passport must meet the Schengen issue-date and validity rules: issued within the previous 10 years on entry, and valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from Schengen. Each child needs their own passport and required visa. Check parental consent and accompanying-adult documents. Children under 12 do not give visa fingerprints; this does not remove the other application requirements.

Check existing visas and residence permits
An existing valid Schengen visa can cover Italy within its permitted territory, dates, entry count and remaining stay. Read the visa carefully before deciding that you need a new one. A valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa can also change the short-visit requirement. Ask the consulate to confirm an unusual document or an EU family-member route.
Italy’s general entry guidance allows a person already resident in another Schengen state with a stay permit to visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A UK, US or other non-Schengen visa is not the Schengen permit described by this rule. Carry the passport and qualifying original document, and still be ready to show the purpose and funding of your trip.

Read the visa before you travel
Check the permitted territory, number of entries, start and end dates and the duration of stay on your visa. The validity window can be longer than the number of days you may spend in Schengen. Keep copies of accommodation and travel evidence available for border checks; a visa does not guarantee entry.
The European Commission says EES became fully operational on April 10, 2026. Its border registration is separate from the visa application and does not extend your stay. On November 3, 2026, ETIAS was not operational and no applications were accepted; it is not a replacement for the Indian tourist’s required visa.
