Japan visa requirements for Australian passport holders

Last verified

Check your passport against Japan’s own validity rule and any transit requirements. Australian tourists can use the short-stay exemption, while work and longer stays need a separate route.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days.

Official sources: Australian Government (Smartraveller).

Who this covers: Ordinary Australian passports for a short tourist visit. Work, residence, emergency documents and other passport categories require separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide covers an ordinary Australian passport. Do not apply it automatically to an emergency, official or other travel document.

Use Japan’s actual passport-validity rule

The Japanese embassy says an Australian tourist’s passport must remain valid during the stay and through departure. It does not impose a general six-month validity requirement for this visit. Check your airline and any transit country separately if the passport is close to expiry.

Check the landing permission and activities

The normal tourist exemption allows up to 90 days. Follow the period granted on arrival. The embassy says tourists may not work, whether paid or unpaid, and should not plan to switch from tourist status to a work status inside Japan.

An airport transfer can matter too. Australian travel advice warns that changing between airports requires you to meet Japan’s entry requirements. An international connection is not necessarily a wholly airside transit.

Keep arrival registration separate from a visa

Visit Japan Web lets you prepare immigration and customs information online. It does not replace a required visa or the immigration inspection on arrival. Visa-exempt tourists do not need to apply for an eVISA just to use it.

Use the Digital Agency link below. The agency does not charge an application fee for Visit Japan Web. The Japanese embassy also describes a paper arrival-card option at the airport, so the online service is not the only way to complete that card.
