Japan visa requirements for Canadian passport holders

Last verified

Keep your return or onward arrangements and accommodation details ready for Japan’s border check. Regular Canadian passport holders can make a short tourist visit without applying for a visa.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Who this covers: Ordinary Canadian passports for a short tourist visit. Work, residence, emergency documents and other passport categories require separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide covers an ordinary Canadian passport. Do not apply it automatically to an emergency, official or other travel document.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The short-stay exemption covers tourism, not income-earning work or residence.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
The exemption list does not state a separate age threshold for this passport group. Child travel documents and border formalities still need checking.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The exemption list does not state a requirement to hold another country’s visa or residence permit for this passport group.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
The normal visa-exempt tourist stay is up to 90 days. The landing permission given at arrival controls your authorized stay.

Prepare evidence of your travel plans

Your regular Canadian passport must remain valid for your expected stay in Japan. Canadian travel advice says officials may ask for a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation and proof that you have enough money for the trip.

Check a temporary passport, emergency travel document or official passport separately. The regular-passport guidance does not establish the rules for every document. Also check transit-country requirements when your flights connect outside Japan.

Separate a holiday from work or a longer stay

The tourist exemption covers stays of up to 90 days. Follow the permission granted at arrival; a visa exemption is not a guarantee of admission. Keep enough time to leave before your authorized stay ends.

A trip involving paid activity or a longer stay needs a different check with the Japanese mission responsible for you. MOFA’s short-stay exemption does not authorize income-earning activity. Do not rely on a tourist itinerary if the real purpose is employment or residence.

Keep arrival registration separate from a visa

Visit Japan Web lets you prepare immigration and customs information online. It does not replace a required visa or the immigration inspection on arrival. Visa-exempt tourists do not need to apply for an eVISA just to use it.

Use the Digital Agency link below. The agency does not charge an application fee for Visit Japan Web. The Japanese embassy also describes a paper arrival-card option at the airport, so the online service is not the only way to complete that card.
