Japan visa requirements for US passport holders

Last verified

Prepare your passport, onward plans and accommodation before flying to Japan. Short tourist entry is visa-exempt, but the immigration officer still decides whether to admit you.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay.

Official sources: U.S. Department of State.

Who this covers: Ordinary US passports for a short tourist visit. Work, residence, emergency documents and other passport categories require separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide covers an ordinary US passport. Do not apply it automatically to an emergency, official or other travel document.

Official sources: U.S. Department of State.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The short-stay exemption covers tourism, not income-earning work or residence.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
The exemption list does not state a separate age threshold for this passport group. Child travel documents and border formalities still need checking.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Residence Not stated in the cited guidance
The cited exemption does not state a residence-country condition for this passport group. Residence-based eVISA application rules are a different process.

The exemption list does not state a requirement to hold another country’s visa or residence permit for this passport group.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
The normal visa-exempt tourist stay is up to 90 days. The landing permission given at arrival controls your authorized stay.

Carry a valid passport and onward plans

Your US passport must remain valid for the whole trip. The State Department also specifies a blank page for an entry stamp. Keep your return or onward ticket and evidence that you can fund the visit accessible.

Check the document rules of any country where you change planes. Japan’s passport-validity rule does not remove a transit country’s requirements or the need to confirm boarding documents with your airline. If a child is traveling with you, carry evidence of your relationship; consent from an absent parent can also help.

Keep the trip within tourist permission

The normal visa-exempt stay is up to 90 days. Check the landing permission you receive and leave before it expires. Admission is not guaranteed simply because your passport qualifies for the exemption.

Do not use tourist entry to take a job in Japan. The State Department warns that visitors cannot change this status to work, study or a spouse status inside Japan. Arrange the appropriate route before departure if the purpose of your stay is changing.

Keep arrival registration separate from a visa

Visit Japan Web lets you prepare immigration and customs information online. It does not replace a required visa or the immigration inspection on arrival. Visa-exempt tourists do not need to apply for an eVISA just to use it.

Use the Digital Agency link below. The agency does not charge an application fee for Visit Japan Web. The Japanese embassy also describes a paper arrival-card option at the airport, so the online service is not the only way to complete that card.
