What the Canadian government says
You need a tourist visa, valid for 3 months. You can apply in advance through the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities or a travel company, and these visas are often linked to the Jordan Pass, which waives visa fees with a minimum stay. Visas on arrival are issued at international airports and at the Sheikh Hussein and Wadi Araba crossings.
You can extend your visa at any police station. Stays of more than 14 days need a formal registration with the Public Security Directorate or a police station within 13 days of entry, but tourist visa holders are exempt during their first 30 days. If you overstay, you are fined when you leave.

Jordan's restricted and non-restricted nationalities
Jordan's Ministry of Interior sorts nationalities into two groups. Restricted nationalities need prior approval before they travel, and their tourist visas are requested through licensed Jordanian tourism offices. Non-restricted nationalities do not need prior approval. The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are not on the restricted list.
Other visa types, such as multiple-entry, transit, work and study visas, are applied for through the Ministry's online e-services.

The Jordan Pass and the visa fee
The Jordan Pass, sold by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, is not a visa. Bought online before you arrive, it waives the fee for a single-entry tourist visa when you stay a minimum number of nights, and it covers entry to more than 40 sites, including Petra, Jerash and Wadi Rum. The Ministry's own pages say two nights in some places and three nights in others, so plan at least three nights if you rely on the waiver.
Show a printed copy at the visa desk and at each site, because the code may not scan from a phone. The pass does not waive the fee for a multiple-entry visa, and it does not include Petra by Night. Buy it only from the official website.

Arriving overland
Jordan does not issue visas at the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge, so you need a visa in advance to enter there. The Ministry of Tourism says Wadi Araba, the crossing near Aqaba, gives visas on arrival only to Jordan Pass holders of non-restricted nationalities. A departure tax of 10 Jordanian dinars is charged in cash at all land border crossings.
