Latvia visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Entry rule for your passport

Who needs a visa for Latvia

Latvia publishes its own list of countries whose citizens can enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. India is not on it for ordinary passports; the only Indian entry on the Foreign Ministry list is for diplomatic passport holders.

The visa-free rule also lets in any third-country national who holds a Schengen short-stay (C) visa, a long-stay (D) visa or a residence permit issued by another Schengen state. If you already hold one, check that it covers your dates before you apply for a new visa.

Where and when to apply

Apply at a Latvian embassy or consulate in the country where you legally live. Applications to Latvian missions are lodged through the external service provider VFS Global. You can lodge an application no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 calendar days before your trip.

The decision comes within 15 calendar days of lodging. In individual cases it can take up to 45. Citizens of some countries go through an additional assessment with a questionnaire; the Foreign Ministry's list of those countries is on its processing page, so ask the mission whether it applies to you.

Documents, money and fees

Bring a passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area and with two blank pages. Add the application form, one 35 x 45 mm color photo, travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen states for the whole stay, and papers showing the purpose of your trip, your accommodation, your means of subsistence and your intention to leave. Fingerprints are taken unless a Schengen mission collected them in the past five years.

Latvia expects at least EUR 14 for each day of a stay of up to 30 days. The visa fee is EUR 90, or EUR 45 for ages 6 to under 12, plus the VFS service fee. Children under six pay no visa fee.

At the border

A visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers can ask for a return ticket, a hotel booking, travel insurance and proof of funds, so carry them. The EU Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a facial image of third-country nationals on short stays and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. ETIAS is not yet operating, and it would not replace the visa an Indian tourist needs.
