Overview
Most first trips spend 2 or 3 days in Kuala Lumpur, with Batu Caves about 30 min away by commuter train and Melaka a day trip by coach. ETS trains then reach Butterworth in about 4 hours, and the ferry crosses to George Town on Penang Island.
Malaysia is hot and humid all year, with short tropical showers in any season. On the west coast, from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, rain peaks in October and November and again in April and May; January, February, June and July are usually drier.
When to go
Thaipusam fills Batu Caves with devotees and kavadi bearers at the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai, in January or February; expect very large crowds on the steps.
