Overview
Most first trips split the stay between two beach bases: Grand Baie in the north, for Port Louis, the Pamplemousses garden and the northern tip, and Flic en Flac in the west, for Chamarel, the Black River Gorges and Le Morne. The island is small: crossing from east to west takes about 1 hour 15 min by car and from north to south about 1 hour 20 min. The airport is in the southeast, about 50 min from Port Louis.
Summer, from November to April, is hot, with the most rain from January to March, and cyclone season runs from November to May. Winter, from May to October, is cooler and windier, good for hiking and kitesurfing at Le Morne, and September to November are the driest months.
When to go
For Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, pilgrims walk from all over the island to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin. Diwali lights up homes in October or November.
