Nepal visa requirements for British citizens

Last verified

British citizens need a visa for Nepal. You can apply online up to 15 days before you arrive and collect and pay for the visa at the airport, or get it from a Nepal embassy before you travel.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa required for visits of up to 90 days; apply online up to 15 days ahead and collect it on arrival. Your passport must expire at least 6 months after you enter Nepal.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Who this covers: Full British citizen passports for a tourist visit to Nepal from the UK, using UK government advice and the Department of Immigration of Nepal. Other British nationality categories, work and restricted-area trekking need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
The UK advice covers full British citizen passports. Holders of other British nationality categories should check with the Nepal Embassy.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The tourist visa covers visits; only holders of a Working Visa may accept employment in Nepal. All visas issued at entry points are tourist visas.

Official sources: Department of Immigration, Government of Nepal (immigration.gov.np).

Age Confirmed for this scope
Children under 10 get a free tourist visa of up to 30 days, but must still complete the online application; normal fees apply for a 90-day visa.

Official sources: Department of Immigration, Government of Nepal (immigration.gov.np).

Residence Conditions to check
The UK advice is written for British citizens travelling from the UK. If you live elsewhere, check with the Nepal embassy that serves you.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
Nepal lists no exemption for ordinary British passports, and no other visa or residence permit removes the need for a tourist visa.

Official sources: Department of Immigration, Government of Nepal (immigration.gov.np).

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
On-arrival tourist visas are issued at Tribhuvan International Airport and the other entry and exit points, but not by the Immigration Office in Pokhara.

Official sources: Department of Immigration, Government of Nepal (immigration.gov.np).

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
You need a visa for visits of up to 90 days, and you can extend it to a total of 150 days in one year. Overstaying is a serious crime.

How to get the visa

You can apply online for a visa on arrival up to 15 days before you arrive, then collect and pay for it at the airport using your submission receipt. You can also fill in the form on the terminals at the airport and queue for the visa there. Cards are accepted, but carry cash as a backup; the UK advice says US dollars are preferred.

Alternatively, apply in advance through the Nepal Embassy in the UK or in another country, which can make immigration quicker. A visa from a mission must be used within 6 months of issue.

Fees, lengths and extensions

The tourist visa costs USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days, all with multiple entries and counted from the day you enter. Extensions cost USD 3 a day, with a minimum of 15 days, up to 150 days in a calendar year; overstaying costs USD 5 a day and can lead to large fines or prison.

At the border

Your passport should have an expiry date at least 6 months after the day you enter Nepal. Border officers may ask for travel insurance that covers healthcare, including repatriation, and for proof of where you will spend your first night, such as a hotel booking.

You need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you arrive from a country with a risk of transmission, and a polio certificate if you come from certain countries.
