New Zealand visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Plan a New Zealand holiday around the immigration permission you qualify for. Indian visitors normally apply for a Visitor Visa, while existing New Zealand permission or eligible Australian permanent residence can change the route.

Entry rule for your passport

For an air tourist visit, apply for a Visitor Visa unless existing New Zealand permission or an eligible Australian permanent resident route applies. NZeTA cruise rules differ. Approval and allowed stay depend on your circumstances.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports visiting for tourism by air. Separate checks apply to cruise arrivals, transit, employment and medical treatment.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Confirmed for this scope
This guide covers an ordinary Indian passport for a visitor application. The passport must normally remain valid at least 3 months after planned departure.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
An existing valid New Zealand visa removes the NZeTA requirement. An eligible Australian PR route is separate; do not assume another foreign visa is enough.

Carrier and arrival route Not stated in the cited guidance
No named-airline restriction was stated for the Visitor Visa route in the reviewed rules. Cruise arrivals and airport transit have separate rules; airline document checks still apply.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
Follow the granted eVisa conditions. INZ assesses single or multiple entry and the permitted stay; a Visitor Visa is not an automatic nine-month entitlement.

Choose the route for your circumstances

For a normal holiday arriving by air, use the Visitor Visa route unless an existing permission or status exception covers your trip. A cruise arrival or airport-only transit needs a separate check in the official tool.

Australian permanent residents may instead travel with an NZeTA and seek an Australian Resident Visa on arrival. This requires a current Australian Permanent Resident or Resident Return Visa, return travel conditions and acceptable character. Temporary Australian residence does not qualify for that resident route.

Prepare evidence that matches the trip

Apply online through Immigration New Zealand. Prepare your passport, photo, trip plans, funds or sponsorship evidence, and onward-travel arrangements. Follow the current online form for the exact document list and translations. INZ advises waiting for approval before paying for non-refundable travel.

The India checklist suggests evidence of employment or business, study, family ties and other home circumstances. Its financial examples include savings history, salary statements and tax returns. A cover letter and day-by-day itinerary can explain who is traveling and why. Provide evidence relevant to your own situation.

Traveling with children

A partner and dependent children aged 19 or younger can be included in the application, with identity and relationship evidence. The India checklist asks for consent from a non-traveling parent when their dependent child is included. Check the application requirements for your family arrangement rather than assuming a child is covered by an adult's permission.

Read the permission you receive

INZ decides whether to issue single or multiple entry and how long the visit may last. Multiple-entry Visitor Visa rules allow up to six months in each twelve-month period; single-entry rules allow up to nine months in eighteen. Follow your own grant and leave before it expires.

A single-entry permission expires when you leave. A return visit requires valid travel conditions. Health or character concerns can lead to requests for further evidence; the application is not approved automatically.

Before boarding and at the border

Carry your passport and the permission that covers your trip, plus evidence of funds and onward plans. Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; for air travel it can be submitted from 24 hours before the journey starts. Customs and biosecurity checks are separate from the visa decision.

If you already hold a valid New Zealand visa, INZ says you do not also need an NZeTA. Check that the visa and travel conditions still permit the journey. Border entry remains a separate decision.
