Overview
Most first trips spend two days in Oslo, then cross the mountains to Bergen, about 6.5 to 7.5 hours direct by train. Many travelers break the journey with the Norway in a Nutshell route: the Bergen Line to Myrdal in about five hours, the Flåm Railway down to Flåm in about an hour, a two-hour cruise through the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, then a bus to Voss and a train to Bergen. This guide covers mainland Norway: Svalbard is outside the Schengen area.
Late spring and summer bring long days and the most departures on the fjord routes. Winter is cold and dark, but the Flåm Railway, the Nærøyfjord boats and the Bergen Line run all year on smaller timetables, and some museums shorten their hours or close on Mondays and Tuesdays.
When to go
17 May is Constitution Day, a national holiday: Norsk Folkemuseum and Bryggens Museum close for the day, so plan museum visits around it.
