Overview
Most first trips start in Muscat, then loop by car. The coast highway reaches Sur in about 2.5 hours, with Wadi Shab about 40 min before the town, and the Sharqiyah Sands lie about 1.5 hours inland from Sur. Nizwa, the base for Bahla, Jabreen, Jebel Shams and Misfat Al Abriyeen, is about 2 hours inland from Muscat. This guide covers northern Oman; Salalah and Dhofar are not included yet.
October to March is the most comfortable time, with winter days in Muscat around 26°C. From June to August lowland temperatures reach 35 to 45°C, while the Hajar Mountains stay up to 15°C cooler. Dhofar in the south has its own misty Khareef season from mid-June to September.
When to go
From March to May the mountain terraces of Jabal Akhdar, near Nizwa, turn pink in the rose season, when villages distill rosewater.
