Entry rule for your passport
No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive and expire at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.
Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).
Who this covers: Ordinary British citizen passports for short tourist visits to Portugal. Residents, EU family-member routes, dual citizens using an EU passport and emergency or official travel documents need separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Conditions to check
- Portugal lists the United Kingdom among visa-exempt nationalities. This guide covers ordinary tourist passports; special and emergency documents need their own check.
Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal (Visa portal).
- Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
- This is a short tourist visit. A Schengen short-stay route is not permission to take employment or establish a business or profession.
Official sources: European Commission, Migration and Home Affairs.
- Age Conditions to check
- Children have additional travel-document and consent requirements. Check the passport-specific family guidance below when a child travels without a parent or legal guardian.
Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).
- Residence Conditions to check
- This guide assumes a visitor without Portuguese residence rights. A valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa changes the documents used for travel; check the permission you hold.
Official sources: European Commission, Migration and Home Affairs.
- Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
- The cited nationality-based exemption lists no requirement to hold a supporting foreign visa. Passport and border-entry requirements still apply; check any special travel document separately.
Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal (Visa portal).
- Carrier and arrival route Not stated in the cited guidance
- The checked nationality list states no named-airline requirement for this tourist exemption. Check transit-country rules and the travel documents your carrier requires for your actual journey.
Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal (Visa portal).
- Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
- The ordinary short-stay ceiling is 90 days in any 180 days across Schengen. A valid passport or residence document does not create a new tourist allowance at every border.

Check your passport and Schengen days
Carry a passport issued within the previous 10 years on entry and valid for at least three months after your planned departure from the Schengen area. Check temporary or emergency documents with the Portuguese consulate.
Count earlier visits to other Schengen countries when planning Portugal. The usual 90 days in any 180 days is shared across the area; crossing from Spain does not restart it. Carry accommodation, onward-travel and funding evidence for border checks.

Prepare the family travel documents
For a nonresident child aged 17 or younger traveling from the UK alone or without a parent or legal guardian, prepare a parental authorization letter. FCDO guidance requires a signed, dated letter, certification by a notary or solicitor, legalization of that signature and a copy of the parent’s or guardian’s passport. Include the child’s identity, dates, purpose, accommodation, responsible adult in Portugal and parent or guardian contact details.
Children need their own travel documents. Check the exact consent requirements for the departure country and family circumstances before booking an unaccompanied journey.
Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK); European Union, Your Europe.
Check border registration before departure
The Entry/Exit System records short-stay entry and exit at Schengen borders. Follow the border officer’s instructions and allow time for biometric checks. The record does not extend your permitted stay.
ETIAS is a separate travel-authorization system. Applications were not open when these sources were checked on 3 Nov 2026. Recheck the official guidance before a later trip; do not buy an authorization from a site claiming to issue it before launch.

Check the linked authorities again before travel; Portugal makes the final entry decision.
