Entry rule for your passport
A Schengen visa is normally required. Valid Schengen residence or long-stay permission can exempt you; follow its conditions and the 90 days in any 180 days short-stay limit.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourism in Portugal. This assumes no existing Schengen permission or EU family-member exception. Apply through the consulate responsible for your legal residence.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Conditions to check
- India is on Portugal’s visa-required list. This guide covers ordinary passports; diplomatic, service and other special documents have separate rules.

- Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
- A short-stay Schengen visa covers a temporary visit. It is not permission to take employment, settle or establish a business or profession.

- Age Conditions to check
- Children and minors need their own passport and a visa when required. Ask the competent consulate for the child’s application and consent checklist; being a child does not itself remove the visa requirement.

- Residence Conditions to check
- Apply to the consulate with territorial responsibility for your legal residence. Portugal should be your sole or main destination; for equal stays, the first Schengen destination determines where to apply.

- Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
- A valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa can permit a short visit without another visa. A usable Schengen short-stay visa may also cover Portugal; check territory, entries and remaining days. Do not assume an unrelated foreign visa qualifies.

- Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
- An airport transit visa does not allow a holiday in Portugal or a transfer to another Schengen airport. Check whether your route crosses the Schengen border and obtain the appropriate entry permission.

- Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
- Follow the visa’s validity dates, authorized duration and number of entries. The 90 days in any 180 days ceiling is not a promise that every visa grants 90 days.

Apply through the correct consulate
Use Portugal’s consulate when Portugal is your only destination or the main destination for the trip. If several Schengen stays are equal, use the first destination’s consulate. The normal jurisdiction is the country where you legally reside, so an Indian passport alone does not determine the application office.
Portugal’s government says to apply between six months and 15 days before travel, with exceptions for justified cases. Check appointment availability early. The consulate may require an interview; an online form does not guarantee an interview-free decision.

Prepare the documents and appointment
Prepare the visa form, photograph, passport, accommodation and trip-purpose evidence, financial documents, evidence of your intention to return home and travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation. Fingerprints are normally collected, with exemptions for specific applicants. The consulate can request additional documents.
Check that your passport meets the 10-year issue rule and is valid for at least three months after your planned Schengen departure. Children need their own passport and required visa. Obtain the consulate’s child-consent and guardian-document checklist for your family rather than reusing an adult application.

Read the visa before traveling
Check the permitted territory, validity dates, allowed days and number of entries on the visa sticker. A single-entry visa cannot be reused after leaving Schengen. A multiple-entry visa may cover several trips, but the short-stay ceiling still applies.
Carry copies of the accommodation, funding and journey documents used in your application. A visa does not guarantee admission. Airport transit permission covers a different journey and does not permit you to leave the international transit area for a visit to Portugal. If you already hold a valid Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa, check that route before applying for another visa.
