Overview
Most first trips start in Ljubljana, where the old town, market and castle fill a day, then branch out by bus and train. Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle make an easy day trip, with hourly buses from Ljubljana to Postojna. Lake Bled is about a bus ride away via Kranj and Radovljica, with Lake Bohinj and the Savica waterfall farther on. Arriva buses run directly from Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna to Piran on the coast.
Late spring and early autumn are the easiest months: sights are open, the lakes are walkable and the crowds are thinner than in summer. Several attractions are seasonal. Vintgar Gorge opens from April to October only, the Saltworks Museum near Piran is closed from November to March, and Bohinj's medieval church opens daily only in summer. Many Slovenian museums close on Mondays.
When to go
Vintgar Gorge is open between April and October only. The Church of St. John the Baptist at Lake Bohinj opens daily only in summer and on weekends at other times until the end of October. The Saltworks Museum at Sečovlje is closed from 1 November to 31 March.

- Bled and Bohinj: Buses run from Ljubljana to Bled through Kranj and Radovljica, and on to Bohinj. The central Bled bus station is a 3-minute walk from the lake.
- The coast: Arriva buses run direct to Piran from Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna. By car, park in the Fornače or Arze garages and walk or take the local shuttle bus.
