South Africa visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian ordinary-passport tourists need advance permission. Eligible adults can use South Africa's ETA system, but age, passport validity and the arrival airport matter; an application is not permission to board or enter.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa required. Eligible adults can apply for an ETA for tourism up to 90 days at four approved airports; registration requires 13 months of passport validity. Children and other routes need a different advance process.

Official sources: Department of Home Affairs, South Africa.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports, short tourism visits; adult ETA applicants entering through an enabled airport.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
The ETA route requires an ordinary passport. Its live registration page requires a passport not expiring within 13 months; the FAQ has different travel-date wording, so check both before applying.

Official sources: Department of Home Affairs, South Africa.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
India is an eligible ETA market for tourist visits. A tourist application does not authorize employment; use the appropriate separate permission for other purposes.

Official sources: Government of South Africa.

Age Conditions to check
Current ETA registration is for applicants aged 18 or older. The FAQ places minor applications in a future phase; arrange the appropriate advance process for children separately.

Official sources: Department of Home Affairs, South Africa.

Residence Confirmed for this scope
The ETA FAQ allows applications from anywhere in the world. That does not remove nationality, passport, age or arrival-port conditions, or establish consular jurisdiction for another route.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
The reviewed tourist ETA rules do not establish an exemption based on holding a US, UK, Schengen or other foreign visa or residence permit; do not use one as a substitute for South African permission.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Use the selected ETA-enabled airport: OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka or Lanseria. No approved-airline restriction is stated, but other arrival ports need a different advance process.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
Tourist stays can be up to 90 days; the immigration officer determines the actual period. ETA validity and multiple-entry permission do not grant an unlimited or automatically renewed stay.

Choose the route before booking

South Africa's current ETA rollout includes India. For the ordinary-passport tourist route covered here, you must be at least 18 and use the enabled airport selected in your application: Johannesburg's OR Tambo, Cape Town, Durban's King Shaka or Lanseria. A land crossing or cruise arrival does not become eligible merely because you already hold an ETA. The portal directs travelers using other ports to the standard application process. Children need their own suitable advance permission; the current FAQ describes ETA applications for minors as a future phase. Ask the responsible South African mission which process applies before buying a journey that depends on an unsupported route.

Check the passport wording carefully

The live ETA registration screen requires an ordinary passport that does not expire within 13 months. Its FAQ separately describes at least seven months from the start of travel and 30 days beyond the visa's expiry, including renewal. These statements are not identical. Do not rely on the shorter FAQ wording to bypass the registration condition: check the live screen and seek clarification from Home Affairs if your dates or document fall between them. The FAQ also calls for a readable machine-readable zone, a clear photograph and an undamaged passport. For a conventional mission application, the reviewed embassy checklist asks for two blank visa pages and validity at least 30 days beyond return; confirm your own mission's checklist rather than assuming the ETA screen applies to every visa route.

Prepare the application and arrival evidence

Use the official Home Affairs portal and follow the identity, passport and photograph steps. The FAQ allows an ETA application from anywhere in the world, so living outside India is not itself a bar to this route. Wait for an actual approval and check its passport details, travel dates and conditions. Carry the approval with your passport, return or onward travel, accommodation information and evidence of funds. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your travel history or route; check that requirement before departure. If the ETA route does not fit, a mission or other standard application can involve additional documents and assessment. The reviewed pages do not promise an interview waiver or a guaranteed processing time.

Understand the permission you receive

The tourist route permits visits of up to 90 days, subject to the actual permission granted at the border. Read the expiry and conditions on both the approval and your entry permission: the time during which you may travel is different from the time you may remain. Multiple-entry wording is not a promise that each return restarts a full allowance. Apply through the proper process if you need an extension; do not assume an application authorizes an overstay. Tourism permission does not cover employment, and the ETA system's separate work-related process should not be confused with a tourist application. Having a foreign visa or residence permit is not a substitute established by the sources reviewed for this guide.

Complete the separate traveler declaration

SARS requires traveler declarations for entry and departure by air, land, sea and rail from 1 July 2026. Children and infants must be covered too; a parent or guardian can complete their declaration. Submit no more than 24 hours before departure; for an incoming connecting flight, use the last leg directly to South Africa. Keep the confirmation available. Air and sea transit travelers who remain in the designated transit area are exempt from this declaration requirement. If you cannot complete it online, ask for assistance at the port. This customs step does not replace an ETA or visa, and an approved ETA does not remove it.
