Sigiriya rock fortress rising above green gardens and forest in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Pair Colombo's markets and coastal evenings with Kandy's temple, lake and gardens. Leave room between bases: short distances can still mean slow road journeys.

Overview

Colombo makes a useful first base for museums, trading streets and meals beside the sea. Kandy adds a different rhythm: a pilgrimage temple by a lake, royal collections, tea history and a large botanical garden nearby. Our seven-day itinerary concentrates on these two bases, with time for both road transfers.

This is a cultural first visit rather than a tour of the whole island. Beaches, wildlife parks and the ancient cities deserve extra days and their own route. Weather also changes by region: the southwest coast and hills receive rain at different times from the east. Choose the part of Sri Lanka you want to explore before choosing a month.

These ratings suit Colombo and Kandy. March and April can bring afternoon storms; May to September is the southwest monsoon. October and November need flexible outdoor plans. The east coast has a different pattern.

Getting around

  • Colombo to Kandy: Allow a generous half day by road, with a driver arranged in advance. Our plan budgets four hours between pickup and lunch; traffic, rain and stops can make it longer.
  • Local journeys: Combine short walks with taxis or tuk-tuks. Agree the destination and fare before an unmetered ride, and avoid building a day around tight cross-city connections.
  • Rail alternatives: Colombo and Kandy have rail links. Check the actual service, reservation and station before changing the road itinerary; its clock times are not a train timetable.
  • Before flying home: Return to Colombo the day before departure. Allow a separate airport transfer and follow your airline's check-in instructions; do not combine a hill-country drive with a tight flight connection.
