Taiwan visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian tourists normally need a visitor visa. A qualifying supporting visa or residence document may instead allow an online Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) for visits of up to 14 days, subject to the conditions below.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa normally required; qualifying document holders may use a Travel Authorization Certificate for up to 14 days. Both routes require 6 months of passport validity; check the certificate conditions before applying.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits. Work, study, official or diplomatic travel and residence applications follow separate rules.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
TAC applications require a valid regular passport with at least 6 months remaining on arrival. Temporary, emergency, official and diplomatic passports and other travel documents cannot use this route.

Trip purpose Conditions to check
Apply under the tourist visitor category for sightseeing. Business, study, family visits, medical treatment and other purposes have separate document lists; a tourist application does not authorize them.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
The checked tourist checklist does not state an age-based exemption. Ask the responsible mission what documents and attendance it requires for a child; do not apply resident-visa rules to a tourist visit.

Residence Not stated in the cited guidance
The Chennai checklist does not establish application jurisdiction for every Indian passport holder. Confirm which mission accepts applications from your place of residence before submitting documents.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
TAC requires a qualifying foreign or Taiwan visa or residence document. Expiry, document type and previous Taiwan permissions matter; an Australian or New Zealand eVisa must remain valid at Taiwan entry. See the detailed conditions below.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
TAC requires a return or onward air or ferry ticket and presentation of the certificate and supporting documents at entry. No named-airline condition is stated in these instructions; this does not waive the carrier's document checks.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
Read the issued visitor visa's enter-before date, permitted stay and single or multiple entry marking separately. The stay begins the day after arrival; a visa's validity is not permission to remain until that date.

Applying for a tourist visitor visa

Complete the BOCA online visa form, then print and sign it for submission with supporting documents to the responsible Taiwan mission. Check the office serving your residence before applying. The Chennai office gives the checklist below for applications it handles; it may request extra documents or an interview.

An ordinary Indian passport does not by itself qualify for the general eVisa. Narrow group-tour, business and government-invitation routes are described below. Do not buy an eVisa service on the assumption that all independent Indian tourists qualify.

Documents listed by the Chennai office

Its tourist checklist asks for:

- the printed and signed online application - current and old passports, with at least 6 months remaining on the current passport from planned entry - two passport-size photographs with a white background - a covering letter explaining the visit and its length - a tentative itinerary and confirmed Taiwan hotel booking - a bank letter covering the last 3 months, sealed and signed by the bank - confirmed return flights

Use the responsible office's current checklist for your own application. Submission and any requested interview do not guarantee a visa.

Which documents can support a TAC

For Indian applicants, the foreign-document route covers the US, Canada, UK, EU or Schengen countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea. A valid entry visa or residence document can qualify, as can one that expired less than 10 years before arrival. An Australian or New Zealand eVisa must still be valid when entering Taiwan. If the qualifying document is a Japanese or Korean visa, carry proof of having entered that country.

A Taiwan entry visa or residence certificate issued within the past 10 years is another possible route. The NIA excludes Taiwan visas marked FL, X, or P with Special permission from MOFA, including the specified Project Kuan-Hong visa/eVisa history, and residence certificates issued for migrant work. Work permits are not qualifying visas. A visa marked void, cancelled or cancelled without prejudice cannot support a TAC.

Check the live NIA instructions against the exact document you hold. When a qualifying expired document has no expiry or validity period, the NIA uses its issue date for the 10-year calculation.

Using an approved TAC

You must also have at least 6 months of passport validity on arrival and an onward or return air or ferry ticket. You must never have worked as a migrant worker in Taiwan and must have no record of immigration irregularities or legal violations there.

An approved TAC lasts 90 days and permits multiple entries, each for up to 14 days counted from the day after arrival. You may enter using TAC only six times in a calendar year. For further visits, apply for a visitor visa before travel. Print the approval and carry the qualifying documents; missing documents can mean refusal of entry. An approval does not remove immigration inspection.

Arrival card and permitted stay

Complete the free online Taiwan Arrival Card within 7 days before arrival. TAC holders do not need it for their first entry using that certificate, but must submit it for later entries during its validity.

For a visitor visa, follow the duration and entry count printed on the visa. A visa allowing at least 60 days without a no-extension restriction can support an extension application with the National Immigration Agency before the stay ends; approval is not automatic. The TAC route has its own 14-day stay limit.

Limited eVisa routes

Indian nationals traveling in groups with agencies designated by Taiwan's Tourism Administration, or on business trips recommended by TAITRA's overseas offices, may apply for an eVisa under those arrangements. People invited by a Taiwan central government agency, including for an event it organizes or sponsors, need the inviting agency's Ecode for that eVisa route.

The eVisa is single entry, valid for 3 months, with a stay of up to 30 days that cannot be extended or converted into another visa. BOCA requires at least 6 months of passport validity at application. Print the approved eVisa and carry it for inspection; eligibility to apply is not guaranteed approval or entry.
