Overview
Turkey (officially Türkiye) works well as one trip: a few days in Istanbul, a short flight to Cappadocia for cave hotels and balloon flights, then the Aegean or Mediterranean coast for ancient ruins and beaches. Domestic flights are short and frequent.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer is hot and busy on the coast, and Cappadocia gets cold winters, sometimes with snow.
When to go
Cappadocia's balloon flights depend on the wind, and some mornings are canceled, so plan two or three mornings there. In Istanbul, mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayers, longest around Friday midday prayers.

Getting around
- Domestic flights: Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri or Nevşehir airport) takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- In Istanbul: Trams, the metro and ferries cover the main sights, and one Istanbulkart card pays for all of them.
- Bosphorus ferries: Public ferries cross between Europe and Asia in about 20 to 25 minutes, the cheapest way to see the strait.
- In Cappadocia: Day tours or a rental car are the easiest way to reach the valleys, underground cities and viewpoints.
