Entry rule for your passport
ETA or Standard Visitor visa normally required for tourist visits of up to 6 months; exemptions apply. Your passport must be valid throughout your stay.

Who this covers: Ordinary Australian passports for short tourist visits. The standard ETA route assumes no British or Irish dual citizenship or existing UK immigration permission; the exceptions below need separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Conditions to check
- This guide covers ordinary Australian tourist passports. Check a temporary, emergency or other travel document separately; dual British or Irish citizenship changes the route.

- Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
- Tourism is permitted as a Standard Visitor. This is not a general work, residence or marriage permission.

- Age Conditions to check
- Children and babies also need their own ETA when the ETA route applies. Under-18 travel and accommodation arrangements require additional checks.

- Residence Conditions to check
- Qualifying Irish residents arriving from Ireland or the Crown Dependencies can be exempt. Existing UK immigration permission also removes the ETA requirement.

- Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
- An existing UK visa can remove the need for an ETA. The cited exception does not establish an exemption just because you hold another country’s visa.

- Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
- Airside transit without crossing UK border control does not require an ETA. A visit or landside transfer is different; confirm the transfer arrangement with your airline.

- Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
- An ordinary tourist visit is usually limited to six months. The longer validity of an ETA is not a longer permitted stay.

Apply with the passport you will carry
Use the official UK ETA app or online application. Have your travel passport, email address, payment method and the required face photograph ready. Someone applying for a traveler who is not with them must use the online service.
Wait for the approval email before traveling. The government says decisions usually arrive within a day but can take up to three working days. The ETA is linked to the application passport: carry that passport, and apply again if you change it. Its two-year validity, or earlier passport expiry, is not permission to stay for two years.

Check exceptions before buying an ETA
British or Irish dual citizens cannot get an ETA. Use the official guidance to confirm the citizenship document needed for your journey, such as a valid British or Irish passport or a passport with a certificate of entitlement. Existing UK visas and permission to live, work or study in the UK also change the route.
A qualifying resident of Ireland traveling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man does not need an ETA. Travelers aged 16 or older must carry an accepted original Irish government residence document. This is a residence-and-route exception, not an exemption for every visitor flying through Dublin.

Prepare for the border and family travel
Keep your accommodation plans, return or onward arrangements and evidence of trip funding accessible. You must satisfy the visitor conditions even with an approved ETA. Frequent visits cannot be used to make the UK your main home, and ordinary tourist permission does not allow work for a UK company.
Every traveler who needs an ETA needs their own, including babies and children. For an under-18 traveler, check parental consent, accommodation and accompanying-adult requirements. An unaccompanied child needs written consent and details of the person caring for them in the UK.
