Entry rule for your passport
Standard Visitor visa normally required for up to 6 months. Check BIVS and other exceptions in the full guide; your passport must be valid throughout your stay.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for tourism, without British or Irish dual citizenship or existing UK immigration permission. Family immigration routes and the conditional BIVS exception require separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.
- Passport type Conditions to check
- The checked route is for an Indian passport without British or Irish dual citizenship. Other travel documents, right of abode and family routes need their own checks.

- Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
- The Standard Visitor route covers tourism. It does not give general permission to work, settle or marry in the UK.

- Residence Conditions to check
- For the BIVS exception, the Irish immigration guidance requires Indian nationals to live in India at the time of application. Check this separately from a normal UK visitor application.

- Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
- The Irish short-stay visa must be in an eligible category and carry the BIVS endorsement. The scheme does not apply to every Irish visa.

- Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
- BIVS requires first travel to the country that issued the visa. Separate transit concessions have their own timing conditions and do not permit a general UK holiday.

- Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
- An ordinary Standard Visitor stay is usually up to six months; follow your permission. A multi-year visitor visa still limits each visit, and BIVS is not an automatic fresh six-month grant.

Allow time for the application appointment
Apply online before travel and attend the required visa application center appointment. The earliest ordinary application is three months before your planned journey. Each family member needs a separate application.
Provide your passport, proposed dates, accommodation, funding and the other documents requested for your circumstances. Documents not in English or Welsh need certified translations. The online form does not remove the appointment or guarantee an interview-free decision.

Check the Irish BIVS endorsement carefully
The British Irish Visa Scheme is a limited exception, not acceptance of every Irish visa. For Indian nationals, Ireland’s immigration service specifies residence in India at application and a visa carrying the BIVS endorsement. A visa officer decides whether to grant that endorsement.
For an eligible Irish visa, first enter Ireland before an onward UK visit. Confirm your remaining permitted stay and the visa conditions rather than assuming a new six-month allowance. Unaccompanied children are excluded by the UK scheme guidance; other child travel still needs appropriate documents.

Keep the visit consistent with your permission
Carry a passport valid throughout the stay, accommodation details and evidence that you can fund the visit and leave afterward. A visitor visa does not allow you to live in the UK through repeated long visits.
If you hold a longer-validity visitor visa, distinguish the last date it can be used from the time allowed on each visit. Check the decision and travel instructions you receive; a submitted application is not permission to board or enter.
