• Book these aheadAlcatraz Island (day 1): timed tickets, or tickets that often sell out.
• Dress in layersFog and wind keep San Francisco cool, even in summer. Carry a warm layer every day, especially for the bridge and Twin Peaks.
• Buy cable-car fares before boardingUse Clipper or MuniMobile for cable-car tickets. Buy before joining the Powell/Market line; a visitor passport includes cable cars.
• Board cable cars along the routeThe turnarounds at each end of the lines have the longest queues. If the line is long, walk up to a stop along the route.
• Expect steep walksSeveral walks in this plan climb steep hills, especially to Coit Tower. Wear shoes with good grip.
