Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Residence status, diplomatic or official passports, work, study and long stays need separate checks.

Do you need a visa?
Yes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists citizens of India among those who need a visa to enter, exit or travel through Bosnia and Herzegovina. The India page says the visa is issued in Budapest. For a tourist trip the visa to ask for is the short-stay visa (Visa C), which covers transit and single or multiple entries.
Visa C allows no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, counting the 180 days before each day of your stay. A longer stay needs a different visa or a residence permit, which this guide does not cover.

Documents to bring
You submit the application in person with a valid passport (valid at least three months beyond the visa you ask for), a completed and signed application form, Bosnia and Herzegovina documentation (an original invitation letter or tourist voucher, or other documents the rules allow), a color photo of 35 x 45 mm, proof of travel health insurance, proof of money to travel and of your intent to stay (such as a return ticket or a certificate of employment or education), and proof that you paid the fee.
A medical certificate is needed only if you come from an area with an epidemic of infectious disease. All documents except the passport must be no more than three months old, and the embassy may ask for more. The ministry page gives no fee amount and says the fee cannot be paid in cash.

At the border and during your stay
Border police can ask you to show money for your stay: the minimum is KM 150 for each day. You must be registered at your address within 48 hours of entry, unless you stay less than 3 days; hotels and other accommodation providers register their guests.
A visa should be obtained before you reach the border. In exceptional cases a one-entry Visa C for up to 15 days or an airport transit visa can be issued at the border for a fee of KM 100 at the airports in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Mostar and at named land crossings. Do not plan a trip around this exception.
