Overview

Most first trips start with three days in Rio de Janeiro for Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, the beaches and Lapa's nightlife. A domestic flight then takes you west to Foz do Iguaçu for the falls in Iguaçu National Park and the Itaipu Dam, and another ends the trip in São Paulo, Brazil's main international gateway, for its museums, markets and food.

Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so December to March is summer: hot, humid and busy on Rio's beaches, with Carnival in February or early March. Many museums close on Mondays, and timed tickets for the Corcovado Train, the national park and MASP are best booked online.

Carnival comes in February or early March, before Lent, with Rio's samba school parades and street parties; book rooms early. On New Year's Eve, Copacabana Beach hosts one of the largest parties on the planet.
