Overview
Most first trips pair Berlin with Munich. Direct ICE trains link the two cities; allow around five hours during the late-2026 engineering works and check the timetable for your date, and Neuschwanstein is a day trip from Munich by regional train to Füssen and a short bus ride.
Summer is the favorite season for excursions, long days outdoors and beer gardens. Winter evenings are cold, snow covers the mountains, and in December Christmas markets fill squares across the country.
When to go
Munich's Oktoberfest runs from late September into early October (19 Sep to 4 Oct in 2026). During Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, Christmas markets open in towns across Germany.
