Overview

Most first trips use three bases: Central, Tai Kwun and the Peak on Hong Kong Island, the temples, markets and museums of Kowloon across Victoria Harbour, and a day on Lantau Island for the Big Buddha. The Star Ferry crosses the harbor, and the cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping takes about 25 min. Lamma Island, a ferry ride from Central Pier 4, adds a village-to-village walk of about 2.5 hours. Hong Kong sets its own entry rules, separate from Chinese Mainland, and Macao is a separate region that this guide does not cover.

November and December are the most pleasant months, with sunshine and breezes, and March and April are milder. May to August are hot and humid, and tropical cyclones can strike from May to November, most often from July to September. Typhoon and black rainstorm warnings can close museums and cancel the nightly Symphony of Lights show, and the Chinese New Year holiday closes some museums for its first two days.
