Hungary visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian tourists normally need a Schengen visa for Hungary. First check whether an existing visa, residence permit or qualifying EU-family card already covers the journey.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa normally required unless an existing Schengen visa, residence permit, long-stay visa or qualifying EU-family card covers the trip. Follow its conditions; qualifying family free movement has separate rules.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports visiting Hungary for short tourism, including applications by residents of India. Official passports, work and residence applications require separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Confirmed for this scope
The ordinary tourist application requires a passport issued within ten years, with two blank pages and validity at least three months beyond the planned Schengen departure.

Official sources: Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
This guide covers a short tourist visit, supported by accommodation and an itinerary. A tourist visa does not establish permission to work, study long term or settle.

Age Conditions to check
Children need their own required travel documents. Under-12s are exempt from fingerprints, not automatically from visas; the mission also requires the appropriate parental consent for minors.

Residence Conditions to check
Residence determines the responsible consulate. Delhi and Mumbai have different territorial responsibilities within India; residents elsewhere should use the mission responsible for their legal residence.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
An existing valid uniform Schengen visa, a Schengen residence permit or a Schengen long-stay visa may cover the trip within its conditions. A qualifying EU-family residence card has a separate exemption described below.

Carrier and arrival route Not stated in the cited guidance
The reviewed tourist guidance does not name a required airline. Airport transit is a separate assessment: some Schengen states require Indian travelers to hold an airport transit visa, which never permits entry.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
Ordinary short stays are limited to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen, subject to the visa's actual dates, entries and allowed stay. Qualifying EU-family free movement has a different stay rule.

Check your existing permission

A valid uniform Schengen visa can cover Hungary without a second national tourist visa. Check its territory, permitted entries, expiry and remaining days. A Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa can also cover a short visit to another Schengen country, normally within 90 days in any 180. Carry your passport and the actual supporting document.

A residence card issued under EU-family free-movement rules is different from an ordinary national residence permit. The official EU guidance permits holders of a qualifying family residence card issued by an EU country other than their EU relative's home country to travel visa-free to Hungary, including alone. Have the mission check your exact card if its legal category is unclear.

Use the correct application office

Apply through Hungary when it is the sole destination or the main destination by length or purpose. Only when no main destination can be established does the first Schengen entry decide the responsible country. Apply where you legally reside; merely being present in India does not automatically establish the right application office.

Within India, consult the Hungarian mission's current Delhi and Mumbai jurisdiction lists before choosing the appointment center. Use the government page to reach the authorized application service and its current checklist. The online form or appointment is only part of submission, and the consulate may request an interview.

Prepare the tourist documents

Prepare the signed form, recent photograph and qualifying passport, then add accommodation, the trip itinerary, travel reservations and evidence of funds and employment or other circumstances. The mission lists bank statements and supporting financial documents, with different evidence for employees, business owners, students and sponsored applicants. Follow the current checklist rather than treating one document as a substitute for the whole file.

Medical insurance must cover the whole Schengen area and the required stay, including emergency care and repatriation, with at least EUR 30,000 cover. The ordinary processing period is 15 calendar days and can extend to 45. Applications can generally be lodged up to six months ahead; leave time for appointments and further checks.

Check children and family exceptions

For a child traveling with one parent, the mission requires the other parent's notarized consent unless an applicable custody or other exception is documented. Unaccompanied minors need the appropriate parental consent and identity evidence. Fingerprint exemptions do not automatically remove document or attendance requirements.

If you accompany or join an EU citizen exercising free movement in a country other than their own, a required family-member visa should be processed quickly and free of charge. This route needs proof of the relationship and travel circumstances. Qualifying family travel can allow up to three months per EU country rather than the ordinary overall Schengen 90/180 limit. Joining a Hungarian citizen in Hungary generally follows national rules; confirm the applicable route.

Separate airside transit from admission

Check every transit country when choosing flights. An airport transit visa covers the designated international transit area only. Collecting baggage, changing airports or continuing into Schengen may require admission permission instead. This guide does not establish a Hungary-specific airport-transit exemption for every Indian itinerary.

At entry, keep accommodation, funds and onward-travel evidence accessible with your passport and permission. A visa is not a guarantee of admission. Count previous Schengen days and follow the shorter stay actually granted; a visa valid for several months does not allow you to remain for all of them.
