Keep the passport valid

Your passport must cover your whole stay. The Mexican embassy recommends 180 days of validity, but FCDO distinguishes that recommendation from the entry requirement.

Check every transit country too. A connection through the US requires the appropriate US visa or ESTA permission even when Mexico does not require a tourist visa. Do that check before booking the route.

Prepare for border questions

Keep your accommodation confirmation, return or onward ticket and evidence of funds accessible for border questions. If staying in a private home, ask the host for an invitation letter identifying the host, travelers and visit.

Tourist permission does not cover paid or voluntary work. Ask the embassy before a research-related activity, including scientific work attached to an adventure or ecotourism trip.

Keep proof of entry

Collect the printed e-gate ticket if you use a gate; you must show it on departure. FCDO says digital proof of entry and permitted stay can be downloaded through the INM portal within your first 60 days.

For land arrival, complete the online immigration form. If nobody stamps your passport at the crossing, find immigration before continuing. Follow the days actually granted.
