Overview
Most visitors base themselves on the Bay of Kotor and add day trips: Perast and its island church, the mountain road up to Lovćen, the beaches and old town of Budva, and Lake Skadar. The mountains and canyons of Durmitor need two or three more days.
May, June, September and October are the sweet spots: a warm sea and fewer crowds than July and August. Some coastal hotels and restaurants close in winter, the wettest season.
When to go
Cruise ships can fill Kotor's old town by midday in summer: visit early in the morning or in the evening.

Getting around
- Airports: Tivat airport is about 15 minutes from Kotor. Podgorica and Dubrovnik, in Croatia, are about 1.5 to 2 hours away by road.
- Buses: Coastal buses link Kotor, Budva and Herceg Novi; the bus station is a short walk from the old town.
- Rental car: The easiest way to reach Lovćen, Lake Skadar and the bay villages. Mountain roads are narrow, with many hairpin bends.
- Car ferry: The Kamenari to Lepetane ferry crosses the narrowest point of the bay and saves the long drive around it.
