Before you go
Beat the cruise crowdsCruise passengers can fill the Old Town from midmorning; explore early or in the evening, and check the port schedule for ship days.
Drive the mountain roads slowlyThe roads to Lovćen, Cetinje and the lake are narrow, with many hairpin bends; allow extra time, and expect slow coast traffic in summer.
Wear good shoesThe fortress climb and the mausoleum stairs are long and steep, and the marble lanes get slippery when wet.
Cover up for churchesCover shoulders and knees for the cathedral, Our Lady of the Rocks and Cetinje Monastery.
Carry some cashMontenegro uses the euro. Cards work in most restaurants, but boats, market stalls and small shops often want cash.
