Romania visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian tourists need a Schengen visa for Romania unless a residence permit or visa from a Schengen state already covers the trip. Residents of India apply in person at the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi after booking an appointment on the eVisa portal.

Entry rule for your passport

Schengen visa required, applied for at the Romanian Embassy in New Delhi. An airport transit visa is also required. A host invitation approved by Romanian immigration is needed only for private stays or business.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania (mae.ro).

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to Romania, with applications lodged at the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi. Existing Schengen permits and EU-family rights can change the route. Work, long stays and diplomatic, service or special passports need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Confirmed for this scope
Romania lists India among the states whose citizens with ordinary passports need a visa. Diplomatic, service and special passports follow a separate regime (Annex 3), so this guide covers ordinary passports only.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The uniform (type C) visa can be issued for tourism, visiting relatives or friends, business, culture, sport and other reasons, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Official sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania (mae.ro).

Age Conditions to check
The visa fee is EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12 and EUR 90 for others. Check the New Delhi embassy's page for the form and fingerprint rules that apply to minors.

Residence Conditions to check
The New Delhi embassy handles applications from residents of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, in person and by appointment. Legal residents of another country normally apply where they live.

Other visas or residence permits Conditions to check
A valid residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen state removes the need for a Romanian visa. Holders of valid Schengen or other qualifying visas can also be exempt from the invitation step.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Romania marks India for an airport transit visa, so changing planes at a Romanian airport without a Schengen visa or residence permit also needs one. A flight into Romania with a valid visa needs no extra step.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
A Schengen visa allows at most 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, with the first and last day counted. Stay only the days the sticker grants.

How Romania lists Indian passports

Romania's own lists place India among the states whose citizens need a short-stay visa under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806. The same list marks India for an airport transit visa and for an invitation approved by the Romanian Inspectorate General for Immigration.

The official guidance requires that invitation for business trips and, for tourism or private reasons, an invitation from the host when you stay in private accommodation. A tourist with hotel bookings is not asked for it on that page, but the embassy can request extra documents.

Where and when to apply

Residents of India lodge the application at the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi. Book an appointment on the eVisa portal first, and bring the filled-in application form. Apply at least 15 days and no more than 6 months before travel.

The embassy says normal processing takes 15 days and can stretch to 45 days when more checks are needed. It works with no agents or intermediaries and says the only fee to pay is the visa fee. Apply to Romania if it is your main destination, or the first Schengen country you enter if stays are of equal length.

Documents, insurance and fees

You need a signed form, one recent photo and a passport valid at least three months after you leave, with two free pages and issued within the last 10 years. Add proof of the purpose of the trip, accommodation, travel plans, enough money for the stay and your intention to return.

Travel medical insurance must cover at least EUR 30,000 in all Schengen states for the whole stay. Fingerprints are taken at the appointment unless they were collected in the last 59 months. The fee is EUR 90, or EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12.

The invitation rule in practice

If you will stay with a host in private accommodation, your host must first have an invitation approved by the immigration inspectorate. Approval takes up to 45 days, and you can apply for the visa within 30 days of approval. Holders of valid residence permits or visas from EU, EEA or Schengen states are among those exempt from this step.

At the border

A visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers can ask you to prove the purpose of your stay and your means, and they check the days you have already spent in the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo on first entry. ETIAS is not yet operating and would not replace the visa.
