Entry rule for your passport
No visa for tourist stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period on an ordinary Australian passport. An emergency passport cannot be used to enter Spain from outside Schengen.
Official sources: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Who this covers: Ordinary Australian passports for short tourist visits to Spain. Emergency passports, European dual citizenship, work and residence are outside the ordinary visitor route.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Count the whole Schengen trip
Add your time in Spain to visits in the other Schengen countries. The short-stay allowance is 90 days in any 180-day period, not a fresh allowance each time you cross a national border.
For entry, your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid at least three months after your planned Schengen departure. Children need their own passports. Check emergency or temporary documents separately.

Keep the border documents accessible
Carry your return or round-trip ticket, accommodation evidence and proof that you can fund the visit. For a private stay, check Spain’s invitation-letter requirements. An invitation proves accommodation; it does not replace the other entry conditions.
Enter through an authorized crossing and keep your passport with you when traveling between Schengen countries. Temporary internal border checks can apply. Visa-free status does not guarantee admission.

Check the passport and border process
Do not rely on this ordinary-passport route if you have an emergency passport: Smartraveller says Spain does not accept it for entry from outside Schengen. Confirm any replacement-document journey with the Spanish authorities before traveling.
EES biometric registration takes place at the border, with no advance application. ETIAS is separate. As checked on 3 Nov 2026, applications are not open. European dual citizens should check which passport and entry process applies to them.
