Spain visa requirements for British citizens

Last verified

British citizens can take a short tourist trip to Spain without a visa, within the Schengen limit. Check the passport’s issue date as well as its expiry date.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive and expire at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Who this covers: Full British citizen passports, using FCDO guidance for travel from the UK. Other British nationality categories, residence rights and European dual citizenship need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
FCDO scopes this route to a full British citizen passport traveling from the UK. Do not transfer it to another British nationality category.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
This route is for a short tourist visit. Work, residence and other purposes require their own permission checks.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Age Conditions to check
Children and minors need their own passport and a visa if required for their nationality. Check consent and accompanying-adult documents separately.

Official sources: European Union, Your Europe.

Residence Conditions to check
FCDO scopes its advice to travel from the UK. A British resident of Spain should carry residence evidence and check the returning-resident rules.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
The cited ordinary visa-free tourist route lists no requirement for a supporting visa from another country. Do not apply this finding to a different passport.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Use an authorized border crossing and meet the document rules. Spain’s general entry guidance names no required airline; transit-country and carrier checks remain separate.

Official sources: Consular Section of the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
The short-stay allowance is up to 90 days in any 180-day period across Schengen. Passport validity does not increase that allowance.

Official sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (GOV.UK).

Count the whole Schengen trip

Add your time in Spain to visits in the other Schengen countries. The short-stay allowance is 90 days in any 180-day period, not a fresh allowance each time you cross a national border.

For entry, your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid at least three months after your planned Schengen departure. Children need their own passports. Check emergency or temporary documents separately.

Keep the border documents accessible

Carry your return or round-trip ticket, accommodation evidence and proof that you can fund the visit. For a private stay, check Spain’s invitation-letter requirements. An invitation proves accommodation; it does not replace the other entry conditions.

Enter through an authorized crossing and keep your passport with you when traveling between Schengen countries. Temporary internal border checks can apply. Visa-free status does not guarantee admission.

Allow time for border registration

The Entry/Exit System records short-stay entry and exit at Schengen borders. Follow staff instructions for biometric registration and allow extra time. Children aged 11 or younger do not give fingerprints for EES, but can still have a photograph taken.

This is a border process, not an advance visa application. Long-term Schengen residents have separate EES exemptions and should carry proof of status. A tourist page does not replace the rules for returning residents.
