Thailand visa requirements for Canadian passport holders

Last verified

Check your regular Canadian passport and keep the documents for your Thai holiday accessible. Your entry stamp determines when you must leave, including if you later receive an extension.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days; your passport must be valid for at least 6 months on entry. Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before you arrive.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Who this covers: Ordinary Canadian passports for a short tourist visit under the current exemption. Other documents, business, employment, residence and repeated-entry plans require separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Stay and visa validity Conditions to check
The tourist exemption allows up to 30 days. An additional period of up to 30 days requires immigration approval; it is not automatic.

Use a valid regular passport

Your regular Canadian passport must be valid for at least six months on entry. Check a temporary passport, emergency document or official passport separately. Your carrier may also apply document requirements for your journey.

Canadian advice says dual nationals must enter and leave Thailand with the same nationality passport. Get your entry stamp from immigration at the border and use the official immigration process for any extension; do not buy a stamp through an intermediary.

Submit a new arrival card for each visit

Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card through the official Immigration Bureau site during the three-day window that includes your arrival date. Have passport details, travel information, your address in Thailand and the requested health information ready. Check the details before submitting and keep the card you receive.

The TDAC is an arrival form, not a visa. It is free through the official service. Every entering traveler needs one, including infants and children. Submit a new card for each entry. Transit passengers who do not pass through immigration do not need a TDAC.

Keep accommodation and departure evidence ready

Keep proof of accommodation, onward travel within the permitted visit and funds for the trip accessible at arrival. Check the Thai mission’s current cash requirement before departure; do not rely only on a bank balance or card. A visa exemption is not a guarantee of admission, and an immigration officer may ask questions or conduct an interview.

This exemption is for tourism. Check the correct permission before a business trip, conference, job, study period or longer stay.

Check your entry stamp and repeat-trip plans

Check the last permitted day on your immigration stamp before leaving the checkpoint. An extension of up to 30 days may be available, but immigration decides whether to grant it. Apply before your current permission expires.

Before planning a third visa-exempt entry in a calendar year, ask the Thai mission whether you need a visa. London’s embassy guidance advises a visa for more than two visits. Do not assume that flying out and back guarantees another exemption.
