Hong Kong visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Last verified

Indian visitors can enter Hong Kong without a visa for up to 14 days, but only after completing the free online pre-arrival registration. For a longer stay, or if registration is unsuccessful, you apply for a visa directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Entry rule for your passport

Visa-free for up to 14 days, but only after you complete free online pre-arrival registration. Carry the signed slip and the same passport, valid at least 6 months.

Who this covers: Ordinary Indian passports for short tourist visits to Hong Kong, which sets its own immigration rules as a Special Administrative Region of China. Diplomatic and official passports, work, study, residence and visits of more than 14 days need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Who needs pre-arrival registration

Indian nationals must apply for and successfully complete pre-arrival registration (PAR) online before they can visit or transit Hong Kong visa-free. You need an Indian passport valid for at least six months and a stay of no more than 14 days. Registration costs nothing.

Several groups can skip it: diplomatic and official passport holders, people enrolled in the e-Channel service for frequent visitors, holders of a valid HKSAR Travel Pass and people who already hold a valid entry visa. Travelers in direct air transit who stay in the airport transit area do not need it either.

How to register

Use the designated GovHK website for pre-arrival registration. Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport, because the system processes the registration automatically and shows the result straight away. Print the notification slip on a blank sheet of white A4 paper and sign it. For a registrant under 16, a parent or guardian checks the data and signs.

The registration is linked to one passport. If you renew or replace the passport, or change your personal details, you must register again. You can make a new registration only when the current one has expired, and you can check its validity online or in the Immigration Department mobile app.

Staying longer or registration fails

A stay of more than 14 days, or a trip for any purpose other than a visit, needs a visa that you apply for before you travel. If your registration is unsuccessful, you must also apply for an entry visa. Visit and transit visa applications from Indian nationals go directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department, and Chinese diplomatic and consular missions will not accept them.

The Immigration Department says it normally takes four weeks to process a visit or transit visa application once it has all the documents. Each case is decided on its merits, and approval is at the department's discretion.

At boarding and on arrival

Before boarding and again at immigration in Hong Kong, you must show the signed notification slip together with the same Indian passport you used to register. If you cannot show both, you can be refused boarding and refused entry.

A slip does not guarantee entry. Visitors also need adequate funds for their stay without working and an onward or return ticket, unless they are in transit to Chinese Mainland or Macao. If you are allowed to land, you receive a landing slip that shows the conditions and the limit of your stay.
