Montenegro visa requirements for Australian passport holders

Last verified

Plan your Montenegro holiday within the short-stay allowance and confirm your address registration. Check passport and transit requirements for the full route before you book.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in 6 months. Register your address with police or a tourist organization within 24 hours, unless your accommodation does it for you.

Official sources: Australian Government (Smartraveller).

Who this covers: Ordinary Australian passports for short tourism. Emergency, official and other documents, employment and residence need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide is limited to an ordinary Australian tourist passport. Other travel documents must be checked separately.

Official sources: Australian Government (Smartraveller).

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The checked short-stay route covers tourism. It is not evidence of general employment or residence permission.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
No separate age-based exemption condition is verified in this guide. Check each child’s passport and any consent documents needed for the journey.

Residence Not stated in the cited guidance
No residence-country condition is verified for this ordinary-passport tourist route. A residence or long-stay application is a separate question.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
No supporting third-country visa requirement is verified for this named-passport exemption. Rules for other nationalities or documents must not be inferred from it.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Check the entry rules for your full route. Sea arrivals use designated ports; land crossings can close at short notice.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
Australian advice allows up to 90 days in a six-month period. Do not treat each border crossing as an automatic new tourist allowance.

Check documents for the whole journey

Confirm passport-validity requirements with the Montenegrin mission, especially if your passport is close to expiry or you will use an emergency document. Check the countries where you change planes or cross a land border as well.

Carry valid identification while in Montenegro. Australian advice names a passport or driver’s license as examples and warns that local authorities may ask to see it. This local ID advice does not make a driver’s license a border-entry document.

Confirm your stay is registered

Arrange registration with the local tourism office or police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and some holiday rentals handle this, but confirm it with your host. A booking alone is not proof that registration is complete.

If you stay in a private home or your accommodation does not register you, complete it yourself. Do not leave this until departure: failing to register can lead to penalties.

Check every border on your route

Montenegro is outside the Schengen area. Time there does not use your Schengen short-stay allowance, and Schengen visits do not use Montenegro’s allowance. Check both sets of entry rules if your trip combines them.

Get your passport stamped when entering and leaving Montenegro. Land crossings can close at short notice. If arriving on a private boat, use a designated port or contact the harbor master or police before entry.

Check temporary residence before staying longer

Australian advice says you need to apply for temporary residence to remain beyond 90 days. It directs travelers to the police station in the district where they are staying and the Montenegrin Interior Ministry for the current process.

Check the documents and eligibility early. Registering your address with a hotel, tourist office or police is separate from obtaining permission for a longer stay.
