Montenegro visa requirements for Canadian passport holders

Last verified

Check your Canadian passport’s expiry and make sure your stay is registered. If you may need more than 90 days, investigate residence permission before the deadline approaches.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for stays of up to 90 days. Passport valid at least 3 months beyond departure. Register your stay with police within 24 hours unless your hotel does it for you.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Who this covers: Ordinary Canadian passports for short tourism. Emergency, official and other documents, employment and residence need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide is limited to an ordinary Canadian tourist passport. Other travel documents must be checked separately.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Trip purpose Confirmed for this scope
The checked short-stay route covers tourism. It is not evidence of general employment or residence permission.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Age Not stated in the cited guidance
No separate age-based exemption condition is verified in this guide. Check each child’s passport and any consent documents needed for the journey.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Residence Not stated in the cited guidance
No residence-country condition is verified for this ordinary-passport tourist route. A residence or long-stay application is a separate question.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
No supporting third-country visa requirement is verified for this named-passport exemption. Rules for other nationalities or documents must not be inferred from it.

Official sources: Government of Canada.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Check the entry rules for your full route. Sea arrivals use designated ports; land crossings can close at short notice.

Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
Canadian advice confirms visa-free tourism for up to 90 days. Confirm cumulative-stay rules with the authorities before arranging repeated or long visits.

Check your regular passport

Your regular Canadian passport must remain valid for at least three months after the date you expect to leave Montenegro. Official passports, temporary passports and emergency documents need separate checks.

Confirm your carrier’s requirements as well, particularly on a journey through another country. The tourist exemption for a Canadian passport does not establish eligibility for someone using a different travel document.

Confirm your stay is registered

Arrange registration with the local tourism office or police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and some holiday rentals handle this, but confirm it with your host. A booking alone is not proof that registration is complete.

If you stay in a private home or your accommodation does not register you, complete it yourself. Do not leave this until departure: failing to register can lead to penalties.

Check every border on your route

Montenegro is outside the Schengen area. Time there does not use your Schengen short-stay allowance, and Schengen visits do not use Montenegro’s allowance. Check both sets of entry rules if your trip combines them.

Get your passport stamped when entering and leaving Montenegro. Land crossings can close at short notice. If arriving on a private boat, use a designated port or contact the harbor master or police before entry.

Act early on a longer stay

Canadian advice says a stay beyond 90 days requires an application for temporary residence at least one week before the 90-day period ends. Check the current application route and your eligibility with the authorities early.

An application deadline is not a promise of approval. Do not plan an overstay while assuming that a hotel registration or a short trip across the border resolves it.
