Entry rule for your passport
No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 days. Passport issued within the last 10 years and valid 3 months past departure. Register with police or the tourist office within 24 hours.
Official sources: UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Who this covers: Ordinary British citizen passports for short tourism. Emergency, official and other documents, employment and residence need separate checks.
Check your circumstances
Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

- British citizens may visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. All Montenegro visits in that period count toward the allowance.

Check the issue and expiry dates
A full British citizen passport must have been issued less than 10 years before entry and remain valid for at least three months after your planned departure. Extra months added when an older passport was renewed do not remove the issue-date condition.
Count all Montenegro visits within the previous 180 days when planning your next trip. Make sure the whole holiday fits the remaining allowance, including any extra nights at the end.

Confirm your stay is registered
Arrange registration with the local tourism office or police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and some holiday rentals handle this, but confirm it with your host. A booking alone is not proof that registration is complete.
If you stay in a private home or your accommodation does not register you, complete it yourself. Do not leave this until departure: failing to register can lead to penalties.

Check every border on your route
Montenegro is outside the Schengen area. Time there does not use your Schengen short-stay allowance, and Schengen visits do not use Montenegro’s allowance. Check both sets of entry rules if your trip combines them.
Get your passport stamped when entering and leaving Montenegro. Land crossings can close at short notice. If arriving on a private boat, use a designated port or contact the harbor master or police before entry.

Check permission for a different stay
For a stay beyond 90 days, contact the Montenegrin mission before arrival to check the visa or permit you need. Ask separately about employment or residence rather than treating tourist entry as general permission.
Keep your stay registration and travel records in order throughout the visit. Registration does not extend the period you are allowed to remain.
